He has created this brilliant game. For years he has worked on making it great.
but reading notches latest blogs i have came to realize mine craft isn't going to live up to it's potential.
MODS are doing better jobs of improving mine craft. yet he rufuses to even look at them because it might inspire him towards making somthing the same. modding supports about the only good thing he's mentioned aside from goblins villagers. now were lucky if we even get a decent update every 2 months. he has bought a studio, but now it seems more like a waste of money. He also said that he does not really look at the current mods that are available, because he does not want to be influenced by other people. That means that he probably does not read all the threads on this forums that provide good solutions to important gameplay problems. He doesn't really seem to care about what the community wants or community solutions to problems.
. I am not typing this because he went away on holiday I've had these thoughts for a while.

i agree with bradels 100% notch has lost his touch and soon his profits.
when minecraft first started notch was saying he will take ideas from the community and all that kinda stuff but now he just dosnt seem to give a **** what any of the community want.
He has completly stopped reading the forums and has now stated he does not widh to veiw this forums general area because it might inspire him to make better newer things.. i say hes an ideot in that respect because the ammount of fantastic mods and mobs on this forum perticuaary firehazards are just fantastic but nooo notch cant put them in the game because he feels bad that he didnt create it in his own head.
and hes lost almost all touch with the community about this game. he didnt even know that all the different trees saplings only spawn the one oridginal crappy bassic trees. all im trying to say is with the ammount of money hes earnt i dont realy think he cares what the games like any more
Ive always agreed with these threads, but you my friend need to prepare for the NDF shitstorm headed your way. It'll start with the lesser known ones, but if someone takes your side, the Generals will find their way in.
What's a NDF **** storm more to the point what is ndf.?
and generals what do you mean?
I disagree, He is trying his best to give us everything, Remember He has like a team of what.. 4-5 People? With 15-20 people it would be way different.

Half of his team is supposedly working on another game. Kind of puzzling to me.
Why is it puzzling? For the company to be successful they have to think long-term. Minecraft simply can't maintain the company forever, so they are working on future games to sustain themselves. Minecraft will still be made to completion, but other things have to be considered.
Regarding the OP: What do you expect to happen? A fairly large update was released not too long ago. Previous updates have been mostly bug fixes and simple changes, as the game gets more complex the updates are going to take longer and be buggier.
His design has obviously changed over the years, the game seems to be getting larger updates farther apart versus the old update every week. I would say that you should just not get your knickers in a twist and enjoy the game.

I think, to Notch, Minecraft is basically finished. What he would like to do is implement the modding interface and leave it to the modding community to create unique experiences with this engine. I think we'll come to a place where the default game is pretty cool, but not that impressive compared to the really solid options in terms of modifications. At that point development will be focused on improving the capability of the engine for the modding community, and we probably won't really see that much "official" content added to the game.
As a game reaches it's release state, to me, that's just a natural progression. It would take an infinite amount of time to rebuild the content of every mod into the game and organize it into such a way that it works. We don't complain that games like Oblivion or Starcraft 2 use this kind of business model. I've already put more time into the default minecraft release than either of those two games, I hardly think notch has let us down.
Mmmm, you're all extremely unfair in your analysis of Notch's workflow. Minecraft is EXTREMELY impressive for a game in Beta. It was your choice to purchase an unfinished game, no one promised you it would be bug free or feature complete in any amount of short time since you bought it.
The game has developed EXTENSIVELY in the last 6 months. If we compare the rate Notch adds features to Minecraft to say, the rate Toady adds features to dwarf fortress, they are pretty comparable.
I guess in the most part it is notch's game and if this is what he wants this is what he gets.
Just don't be surprised when E.A or some other company release are similar but better founded game. cause lets face it mine craft is a indie game a heart.
Most of the items toady posted in that hotfix patch are minor text string updates. I'd place a wager most of Notches development time recently has been focused on fighting lag issues and missing chunks and what not, stuff that isn't easy to patch in 2 weeks. Toady also tends to be much more obsessive about changelogs than Notch is, I regularly find stuff changed over in minecraft versions that is left off changelogs. Often majorish changes. I'm sure the super minor stuff that is less player visible is overlooked more often.
There's also the question about how much time notch and his team are spending on their other project and issues like marketing and dealing with public relations stuff, toady basically doesn't do any of that.
Don't forget he has been on vacation for the majority of 2011 thus far. Actually, more or less since early December he has been on vacation.
Scratch that, more or less September of 2010.
I wish I could go on vacation as much as Notch. Guy needs a 2 week vacation every 5 days.
The NDF sit there and say "Notch isn't a robot, blahblah." How about Notch devotes several months of time to the game before going on vacation, you know, like the rest of the working world.
I think Notch is doing the rock star thing now that he's suddenly a millionaire. If he's a mature adult I think it'd calm down before too long. I just don't think we have valid grounds to be angry at him for it quite yet. Your purchase of his game was not a purchase of a contract guaranteeing X amount of hours of work each day on that game.
i dont realy care but if iu read the very short list of conditions it says that i do not gareente that i will finish the game or something like that so there he neva said he had to finish it but it would be nice if he took inspiraition for mods and gave peps credit if he felt they where worthy

You haven't been around long have you? Take a look back when Notch worked his ass off, pre September 2010. Look at that and then compare it to now when he has a TEAM of people. I dont remember who, but someone actually did the calculations that when we should be getting 6x the amount of content, we are actually getting 1/36th of what used to be programmed Pre-Team.
Development of this game isn't just implementing new content. At least in recent history, the change over from making survival Minecraft primarily a single player game to primarily a multiplayer game would have resulted in a huge amount of work, especially if you're not familiar with optimizations for online communication protocols and what not.
I've seen attempts to do that kill game projects entirely. All things considered, it went pretty well for Minecraft, although it's clearly not finished yet.
I can only guess exactly what the development future of Minecraft is gonna be, but I don't think Notch is doing quite as little the amount of work as people are assuming he is. I can tell you that I expect to see this period of very little new content being produced to continue into the near future as work gears up onto focusing on the modding API. The thing is though, although modding API appears to be zero results work to the player booting up the default game, it's a stratigic decision. If they can develop the modding community for this game, it will have the staying power to compete when all the clones with better graphics start hitting the market in the next year or so.
He got a team and started to slack off thinking they'd do some work, but they haven't really added anything.
And yeah he does take way too much time off.....I hate to be insensitive (and I probably am cause we all don't know notch's mum has some serious medical condition or something) but does he really need to take 2 weeks holiday to see his mum? What about a week? Week and a half?
Come on man you said you'd add things and it seems ever since I bought the game he's just got lazy.

Relying on the community to iron out everything Notch could easily fix himself is exactly what I fear Minecraft will end up to do, which is just wrong on so many levels.
Official modding support should encourage people to create additions to your game because they want to, not because they feel a need to do so to keep the game entertaining, content and performance wise.
Eh, I kinda see where you're coming from... but in the end of the day, a decision has to be made about weather you focus attention on engine technology, or game content. And for an indie project with a million some odd users, engine technology is a safer choice, as you probably can't even compete with the game content your modding community will be coming up with.
I don't disagree that notch should not be "relying on the community to iron out everything he could easily fix himself". But I think you have to separate bugs from gameplay content. Fixing bugs is necessary and good, it makes every modded game stronger, however, adding some new block or something, at the point when there are hundreds of people developing new content for the game all the time, is probably a waste of effort. It's not "Fixing a problem".
Things like adding story lines to minecraft, creating new visual blocks, creating new environments, creating new Mobs, creating new combinations of already existing blocks, making new tools and what not, I think that is stuff the modding community will take over in the coming year. for Notch and the Minecraft team, their job will be technology.
