Okay, I mean, I know WHY. "I" is for INVENTORY! But "Q" isn't for "throw", and "shift" doesn't resemble crouch in any way... anyway, my point is that "e" is a much much much more appropriate button for the inventory. The i key is in a very awkward place--you have to reach waaay over there and take your fingers off the movement keys to use it.
So, I'm curious if Notch might as well change the default. Set the inventory to e. Maybe you didn't know you could change it. Maybe you like the way it is. Or, maybe you agree with me and have to change the stupid thing every single time you play.
It usually helps for people who played some computer RPGs and come across Minecraft
And I've never played a RPG that opens up inventory with E. Never.
All RPG games I played had either I for inventory (especially most MMORPGs), or Tab (Oblivion) or Esc (misc.)

I use "F" and I change the fog to "C". I think of it as "Camera", only because I feel that "F" is the most convenient to hit. Although "E" and others would obviously be convenient as well. I've just gotten used to "F", and I think I used "F" somewhere else too... I don't know, can't remember where.
I personally hate the WASD configuration so I remap every game which uses such to ESDF (home row ftw!). Thus I can't really use the "e" key for inventory or else it would open every time I tried to move forward, and like many have already expressed the "i" key is too far away for quick inventory opening. I use "v".

Given you have quickslots at the bottom (And more than enough) why do you need to access the inventory while keeping your fingers over WSAD. Weapons should already be in your quickslots and to use stuff like blocks for building you don't need to hover your fingers over WSAD.
Seems a mute point that "I" is far away from WSAD.

I thought I was the only one, lol
To be honest though it isn't so much that I dislike WASD, it started with good old Duke Nukem 3d...Q and W for strafe, A jump, Z crouch, ESDF for movement, R for use etc. mouse support was pretty bad (this was LONG before any windows ports at all, being that the game was pretty much new). Of course I then got other games that did work with the mouse, and basically required it (quake, Quake 2) and I adapted some of my settings accordingly, but the ESDF (and r for use) configuration stuck. Now I'm cursed to have to modify controller configurations for all eternity since they all default to WASD. And given games nowadays have about a bajillion bindings (and why are their interfaces so generally horrible? I mean, some of them will just say "that key is already bound" and refuse to let you CHANGE IT. so then I have to go hunting for what that key is currently set to and change that, only to find the key I want to set it to is already set to something else, and so on and so on until I FINALLY find one that I can set...
I like minecraft control-wise because it doesn't have a bajillion bindings and changing them takes only a few seconds.
As for inventory, I don't have a problem with it.usually I'd only have to open it to do some 2x2 crafting, since I generally make sure the more important items are already on the hotbar. And regardless of what key you have it set to or how "easy to access" it is, opening the inventory while under fire or being chased is generally not a good idea.
I've actually found myself getting confused when I play Fallout 3 and new vegas now, I keep trying to open my pip boy with I...

i is way to far away from everything else
Q: Move Left
E: Move Right
R: Inventory
P: Drop item
The reason I changed left and right to Q E instead of A D is because they're strafe left right, and in every other game Q E are strafe, A D are turn.
R for inventory because it's nice and close, P for drop because it's not close at all and I rarely drop what I'm holding.
