i bought the beta and then was ridiculed by many of my friends for doing so since i can no longer get free updates. I cant help but feel a little ripped off and sick about it. I guess ill continue playing until i have to keep dishing money out to play. Just a shame to be punished for supporting a game even though I didnt do all the research about what i was buying. The way it's worded the release isnt even included?
Everytime i talk about it, "i bought minecraft looking for others who may want to play on my server":
"oh yeah i woulda bought that too, except they stopped offering paid updates".
"oh you bought that? did you get it in alpha?"
It's really just too bad, wish he would be more clear about if he's trying to make every update a 5$ upgrade, or he plans on 1 expansion every couple years for 9.99$ or something. I just want to say i love to support solid games, but just the way he went about this has really hindered the fun and now that's all i think about it when i play. Not too mention it gives every person an excuse not to try it or even think about buying it.
I dont see any posts about this, seems like the most talked about subject when i mention the game lol.
I'd probably not have bought it as well if i had read into it more. oh well heres some free moneys
Sigh..you WILL get all updates up to and including the full minecraft game...
It makes no difference if you buy it in beta or after notch releases the full game
It does, actually.
Well, it WILL, once the game is finished and gets addons.
I summed up everything we know about the differences between Alpha and Beta accounts here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=110035
it will IF the game is finished gets addons.
also, you have to be pretty dumb to say it "hinders the fun" when you're talking about something that MIGHT happen, and even if it does, it will be late this year. seriously, the people complaining about alpha/beta differences are such babies.

Yes, I hate it when I don't read what I'm getting and waste my money. Especially when research is difficult, like reading the 'prepurchase' page.
You will also get the full version of Minecraft when it is released.
I can see how that might be confusing.

This forum ticked me off so much I went to random.org and set my password to something I'll never be able to remember, then switched my password reset to a throwaway.
i know, i should read all disclaimers rather then assume the best out of something. The actual statement says all updates "until" the release are covered, so yes that is rather confusing. I'm glad a user can clear it up and make it straight forward.
The point is more the situation he created where a million people are covered and now anyone who wants in is screwed lol. I know everyone should be humble and accept everything, but he should have just went about this differently rather than making it so you look stupid for buying the beta, and should join the protest to bring back free updates. I dont really care that much about free updates for myself, but i cant get a single friend to join and start playing. He uses the word update, so it doesnt seem like he means expansions. This is where confusion sets in. updates, bug fixes, xpacs, releases, all words are used interchangably.
It would be so much better if everyone was in the same boat instead of alpha accounts and beta accounts. Are alpha accounts now worth more? Do they have special privledges? Should i search for alpha accounts for sale? Like how is this productive to the furthering support. I dont need people to say qq at me, I'm not short on money to help support, but now it's much less fun because my server is empty, friends are playing other games, and it's because the method of making something completely unavailable and being confusing in all his disclaimers. I'm not whining, i would actually like to see the game go further and have my friends join.
I cannot help but break this post down into each point it covers, because you really do infuriate me with your lack of....I don't know, rationality?

I know you didn't really get on board until recently, but it was around 600,000 people who essentially threw their money behind this game as a form of support when they bought Alpha. They are being rewarded for supporting the game early and making it a huge success so far. No one has been screwed out of anything, and you sound like an extremely selfish person when you claim otherwise. You didn't support the game in Alpha - tough ****. No protest or petition is going to bring Alpha perks to Beta accounts, because it was mostly changed for legal reasons.

He didn't make anyone look stupid. If anything, the situation simply frustrates you, and you wish you had gotten on board sooner. You didn't. Period. Your friends aren't avoiding the game because of what Notch did, they're avoiding it because you make things sound so crappy with negative whining. I'm sorry if this comes off as harsh, but Jesus Christ man, you sound absolutely jealous of everyone in Alpha.
And for what it's worth, updates, bug fixes, xpacs, releases - all of these terms are most certainly NOT interchangeable. Anyone who's played an MMO knows the differences, unless they are just spouting off garbage because of jealousy.

No, it wouldn't, because it's not the same boat anymore. Alpha members supported the game before it hit mainstream. Beta members DID NOT. Reread that and let it sink in. That doesn't mean that Alpha members are 'better' than Beta members, it just means that we helped build the boat that you now ride in. We invested early, and got paid a dividend on our investment.

You are whining. And the fact of the matter is that once Minecraft went into Beta, sales started skyrocketing. The game IS going further now.
All i do is tell them how awesome the game is, and they reply with what i stated. Maybe im not a great salesman, but why make it such a hard pitch.
I dont care about being alpha, just change the situation, so people dont feel like "i dont want to because"
I try to explain, it's only 20 bucks, hell it's cheaper than a night at the bar, and this game has infinite possiblities, never seen anything like it. "yeah but they are just goign to feed it with updates to make me pay like such and such game"
I mean obviously, people have to make money, but this is just a horrible way of showing it. It says "we plan on charging you when you start to play and like the game" I'm really the only person having this problem?
Do you ***** this much when you don't get free expansions on xbox live? I guess you could have waited until release and paid twice as much for the game so you could have the expansions. Or you can realize you did not purchase minecraft. You purchased the beta. You are using a demo of sorts. Alpha users paid for a third of a game. When it was in alpha there was not enough content to sell. So we invested. Our investment came with the guarantee that we get every bit of content released. Beta users are demoing and testing the game, and you still get the full version when its done. You just don't get the expansion. There is no saying it isn't fair, you should have paid half the price for a quarter of the content if it bothers you so much. Geezus.

Erm no there is no difference, I'm talking about beta vs after-release...not alpha vs beta
I dont get it, what is your problem?
You buy THE GAME, and you get THE GAME...its as simple as that.
Think of it as pre-ordering the game, only you get to play it before its finished.
Yes alpha accounts get free anything related to minecraft in the future, but what can you do...
And yes notch means expansions AFTER the game is finished...you wont be cheated out of anything
For example people who bought minecraft after it reached beta got this update for free
http://notch.tumblr.com/post/2730532961 ... t-beta-1-2
And they will continue to get free updates until minecraft release.
Simple, no?
