Um in no way was i comparing the game world of warcraft to the game Minecraft you tards.
Since you missed the point I guess I have to explain for the kiddies out there.
Wow - Tones of money and dev work yet still has the same issues as a indy game like minecraft.
So the point is these problems you whine about are universal and not because notch or his staff are lazy. Also I think its funny that people think they are entitled to anything once they buy something. Yes I admit there is a level of quality but seriously you bought the game as is, be glad that you are even entitled to updates and free content. Most companies would make you pay for such things like Wow.
^ I've yet to meet anyone whining about the game like this that doesn't think its because they're entitled to whatever they like just because they payed for the game.
Guess what, all 1 million of the rest of us did too.
Just saying if in the upload my MC acct got wiped and this was the last of it I ever played:
I payed $12 USD
I played over 100hrs
That is 12 cents an hour
I know this girl, she wants $100 an hour
a movie is $10 at theatre, so average that to $5 an hour
I think having a couple lights on in the house is more than 12 cents an hour.
Hmm, at price per gallon of water flushing toilet is more expensive.
An hour of MC is cheaper than pooping.
I hope that MC adds in tons more ****. Like dragons and goblin villages, perhaps quests and NPCs and bad ass dungeons. **** it, have all the skills in Ultima Online and World of Warcraft in it.
But still, I feel my money was well spent even if I never get to play MC again.
As far as how much money he is making, here is an analogy. Take a look at the wall street/bank bailouts. Those ****ing CEOs failed miserably, yet still got their multi million bonuses. They stole your tax dollars and had vacations.
Once again, minecraft.net is more popular than the poor old server can keep up with, so we’re upgrading. I’m not quite sure how long it will take to get done as it’s mostly Tobias doing the work (thank you, sir!). We’ve got a huge amazon cloud server which we’re moving the main server to. We’ll be able to replicate this as demand grows, and we’ll have a load balancer set up in front of it all. Skin downloads will almost certainly be migrated to S3 downloads instead of going through resin as it does now, and we’ll have a separate server just to handle game logins and auth requests.
In other news, we spent the day today out of the office in various cafés, as the floor was getting fixed. And we got the Machinima.com IGA awards! They’re pretty!
If you want to see some pics from the office and Mojang in general, Carl has a photo album here. It gets updated every now and then.
For Minecraft development, we’re working on the new file format, and a new game launcher. The file format is still in early testing, but it’s looking somewhat promising, except for it taking up a bit too much space. It’s faster, though.
The new Launcher will be a bit prettier, will show release notes and other news, will send login requests over https (finally), and will ask if the user wants to update to the latest version or not. In the future, we’ll add support for playing the previous installed version (after warning the player that there might be unexpected bugs) and the ability to choose what work directly to save the level files, but that’s not coming in this version.
We’ve got a meeting planned for tomorrow with some community members to discuss how to best implement the modding.
I paid for a game that I thought looked good in creative.
I paid for a game that multiple friends insisted I check out.
I paid for a game, not even out of alpha with full knowledge that this may just bottom out.
There's numerous reasons, but the last one is important.
Everyone knew that it was in alpha or beta when they bought it, if something is in a beta stage of development it could never reach full-release. It could just end there and never be bothered with again, and we all took that risk. Now you can't tell me that just because it went from alpha to beta means that it will become a full-release game. You can't say that he "took" our money without a legal exchange, .e.g, this game. We paid him what... $15-$20 for an amazing game, yet you insist he doesn't care about us, or that it was a scam...
Ok, it seems some of you people are seriously limited...
So let's begin with world of warcraft (not to mention that dude above started talking about paperwork and ****, while im saying that comparing WoW and Minecraft in terms of server-side performance is idiotic.)
Blizzard is running a service called Battle.net (you have to be living under a rock to not know this), which is directly tied into their WoW server towers all over the world, aswell as server towers for all their other games, ranging from warcraft to stacraft 2 (and, to be more exact, WC3/FT, SC1, SC2, Diablo 1, Diablo 2, WoW and so on.)
Per region (Americas, Europe, Asia) - the total amount of actively connected users ranges in double digit millions constantly, now, to bring it more into perspective -
each player that plays the game, obviously sends updates to the servers (not going into specifics, **** like changing unit statuses, using abilities etc.) while at the same time, they have to process relative player positions, inclusive reactions of abilities against eachother, that transfers over insane amounts of operations and updates per second over all their hardware - this alone takes alot of bandwidth and processing power, now add to it the fact that those servers also have to account for services such as:
c) Cross-game chat/support
e) Generally millions of logins to account management pages themself.
Being and ex-wow player myself, i've done my research and often during the downtimes, i've read official posts concerning the reasons of why servers go down - it's because of the massive cluster**** of a mess that happens when 1 thing goes wrong (yes, the dominoe effect still persists to this day, even with all the failsafes), basically, every single service has to be kept under constant observation 24/7 by hundreds of IT guys.
The only times that realms go down, is during the middle of the week, and that only last for what, 5 hours? DAMN that sure is alot of time in exchange for the fact that those servers run smooth atleast 350 days a year - oh, and what do they do during those 5 hours, watch porn? no, they clear server cache, remove corrupt logs, restart the servers, and run a general diagnostic on them to ensure that no disaster is lurking from the shadows.
Oh and btw, Blizzard is nice and tends to compensate their playerbase (in regards to wow) for lost playtime, caused by excess downtime.
So please, do NOT even think about comparing such a insanely massive network like Battle.net to something like minecraft... it's just pathetic and makes you look stupid.
You're probably going to try and say some smart-assed **** now, but don't bother... It's just reality.
Okay.. and this has to do what with the thread?
Pretty sure nobody was comparing WoW's performance to Minecraft, or anything even related to that, the above poster clarified what they meant mentioning WoW, and prior to that you basically jumped into the thread just to spew a buncha "kiss ass" comments.
You know the funniest part of this is that you can pretty much take some of these rants about this game go into the Wow forums and find the same rants there. Its funny too because I actually do support bitching at Blizzard for not fixing things since they DO charge you a monthly fee. I think people just like to complain about anything really.

I have been lost in the nether for a few days now.......
It's good to see more people getting their frustrations out. Despite his lack of grammar and no tact, he is absolutely correct. If Notch sells 6,000 copies a day, it equates to $120,000 a day which is waaaay more than enough to hire a few new people AND upgrade the servers.
It is inexcusable and unacceptable, but the fanboys will vehemently defend him.
Notch is not a Swedish coding machinejoke shamelessly stolen from someone. He needs food, sleep, and forms of entertainment. He also has a house and therefore pays taxes. Swedish taxes are WAY higher than American taxes, so he loses a big chunk of that money. Besides, there is a little disclaimer in the minecraft website. It reads something along the lines of "You pay for the product as it is right now. You are not entitled to updates." SO QUIT ****ING WHINING is the summary of this. Notch is a person who made a game you play. If you are not presently enjoying the direction he is taking with this game and how Mojang is handling things right now, STOP WHINING ON THE FORUMS! If you have a formal complaint, EMAIL IT TO HIM INSTEAD OF CLOGGING THE FORUMS. Thanks you very much.
Also we arn't even talking about DRM, do you know what DRM Is?
Digital Media Rights/Digital Rights Media, I'm not asking him to Shut down his rights to his game, or give the rights up
I'm asking him to allow Server Admins to have there own Authentication Servers
Mine craft is down "Yet again" and those of us who bought the game game to play with friends, Beta or not, Can not play a product we paid for, and Us in America has it even worse, we had to pay extra Fee's and conversion fees, so it racked the Price up by 5Dollars+
The DRM and Authentication server are completely Different things!
Please Do something about the Authentication issues or refund us for a product you are unable to keep stable.
I am not happy with the fact this game has been down every single day since I paid 20+Dollars for it.
This isn't a Small issue, Its a unacceptable issue for someone who has racked in About 20million (This is according to my research)
So I am asking as a User who loves minecraft Please do something about the server instability's or give us a way for server admins to Authenticate log ins in our own database so we can at least Play the game!
It's not the game they are complaining about, it's the stupid user name verification server almost always not responding due to the incompetence of who ever is in charge of running it.
Now I have tried the offline mode multiplayer but having it just put people as "player#" is retarded at best due to the fact I can't become op on my own damn server short of creating a mod my self to allow command based logins (something of which should have been built in as part of the multiplayer system from the beginning).
This whole not being able to login to use my own ****ing server to even develop mods let alone be op is asinine!
Now if I had known how this all worked before I had gotten Minecraft I wouldn't have bothered getting it because it's a control freak way of running ****, but that is exactly why it's left out as no one would likely buy into such.
Oh and I could say the same thing about growing up to some one flaming a post in all caps, nothing says child more then all caps, so yeah, you also should grow up.
EVERYONE STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT A GAME WHICH HAS OCCASIONAL DOWNTIME!!!!
EVERY ONLINE GAME ON PC HAS BUGS, SERVER DOWNTIME ETC (runescape, world of warcraft etc. GROW UP AND ACCEPT THAT THE GAME IS NOT FINISHED, AND THAT YOU CAN STILL PLAY IT.
GROW UP LIKE EVERYONE ELSE AND REALIZE THIS IS PART OF DEVELOPING A GAME WHICH HAS 100000S OF PEOPLE TRYING TO ACCESS THER SERVERS AT ONCE. CAN YOU MAKE A BETTER GAME/SERVER? SEND ME A LINK IF YOU CAN. YOU CAN'T THOUGH, CAN YOU? SO SHUT UP. NOTCH IS DOING HIS BEST.
Please lose caps, we are having a Real discussion here, First off let me point to how your so wrong.
using your same "proof" I play the games you mentioned Specifically World of warcraft, World of warcraft normally only goes down daring maintenance day, Thats not "Occasional" downtime, thats a "Pre defined down time" there are very RARE times when it goes down other then that, but its RARE
Secondly, the game is not finished Sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, but we aren't talking about the freaken Game, we are taking about the Authentication Server, they are different things, so if you do not understand that, please take your screaming caps abusing unable to find the cops lock key out of my thread!
This thread has nothing to do with the game, its all about the Authentication Server, and you say Occasional Downtime? Don't make me laugh.. ever since I paid 20+Dollars I have not been able to stay loged in for more then 5mins, its been down EVERY SINGLE DAY, Doing his best? He could start listening to suggestions that will reduce the amount of load on his Servers such as the one I Suggested
Fan boyisum is a bad habbit to have, you need to be open and speak, not scream at anyone who thinks the person your in love with is doing a bad job
Notch isn't doing his best, this has been Commonly happening for weeks now
Secondly, for a person who racked in over 20million dollars, theres no excuse he can't run a better server or hire some help, or Allow us to have our own Authentication login for the servers we host!
so once again "We are not talking about the game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" get that though your head,
No i do and have run a Business and i can not tell a contractor sorry i cant put down that 5000 square foot of hardwood floors you want the way you want it at the time you want it because i would lose business.
So all of you morons who keep talking about running a business at least make some ****ing sense when you post.
Running a Business means you meet the demands of the customer first and everything else is second.
(aside from someone in the family being really sick)
If you try to run a business with me me first attitude like Notch is it will fail.
Priority 1: Family (Fiancée + son, anyone?...)
Priority 2: Staying healthy (Yes, relaxation is a part of it, do some research for once)
Priority 3: Make sure the game works (Which is what he is doing right now by migrating servers)
Have you got any clue how a business plan works???
Say as most people do you need to get a Business loan from a bank you have to have a business plan in place on how you intend to give them your money back.
A Sound Business Concept
(I do not think he does)
Understanding of Your Market & A Stable Industry
Stable Industry ? yes Does he really understand the market i do not think he does
Its just him you can not manage everything your self
This is a Big one you need someone working on P&L statements (profit and loss for those that do not now)
This means you take every last bit of money (revenue) brought in by the in this case game of minecraft
And start deducting Expenses
These include Hardware of any kind payroll including a salary you pay your self,
insurance, normal bills you need in a building electricity, water ect
Office supplies, Taxes , any repairs to anything related to your business,Right down to the toilet paper in your bathrooms this list goes on and on
Resulting in how much you've made money (your profits) or lost money (your deficits). Basically, the statement includes total sales minus total expenses. It presents the nature of your overall profit and loss over a period of time. Therefore, the Income Statement gives you a sense for how well the business is operating.
This does not included Buying a new house, cars, toys t,aking vacations , going out to expensive cafes and buying anything entertainment based.!
Consistent Business Focus
This means you are focused on where your business is going and how you are going to get there.
Mindset to Anticipate and expect Change.
We know he didn't have this Hence last minute server upgrades and clearly all the statements of i didn't see it becoming this big.
As far as i know its just Code minecraft in my spare time when i feel like it
There is so much more you need to know about how to run the business
and if he doesn't implement these rules in place soon his business will Fail
I can go on with more about how to run a business if you would like me to
This was just a short summary to shut up all you people who talk about not knowing how to run a business when you do not have the slightest clue your self.
Ive run a business for over 10 years now and I can tell you know if when i needed to finance my warehouse space
and the bank asked me how im going to pay for it i told them
well first im going to look after my family and make sure i spend lots of time with them
then im going to make sure i stay nice and healthy and not stress about it and just relax
Then when i feel like it i will get around to making money to pay you guys off
My business would have never got off the ground.
So before you assume anything about peoples knowledge about running a business put a little thought on how you intend to reply to this
