lol, i quit my job 2 pley other games other den updating minecraft lol
Nah brah during the first months of the alpha version of survival Notch was actually dishing out updates like ****ing crazy and actually working hard with diligence and dedication. Only until the major bloggers, and review websites started giving him the spotlight did he start playing video games (hours and hours of Civ 5 anyone?) and not giving a **** anymore while setting up his company.
Yah mon, i was there during that few good months when notch gave us secret Friday updates, and then stopped so then i made this prediction chart awhile awhile awhile back, it came out somewhat true. http://i52.tinypic.com/mafeja.png
Has anyone properly disputed the image in this? I bought minecraft back when it was just creative mode, so its not GIVEMEWHATIWANTNOW. Its more like, I was promised updates and I got updates rapidly at first. Now if you read his blog or twitter he almost never does work on minecraft, and not even just when he was sick. Its been that way for a while, he does one or two days of work, releases a bug ridden piece of **** and then goes back to playing vidya. He's just like any other person who suddenly gets 5 minutes of fame, he gets lazy and all his ideals suddenly fly out the window. Instead of working on minecraft he plays games and makes other games.
Yes I have no idea how to program. Yes I know making a game is hard. Yes I know modders number in the hundreds, if not thousands while notch's team is 7 people. Except one person can release more working content in the same time than notch's whole team has in a month. I have friends who code ****, I have tried to code **** myself. I could barely make a hello world command, let alone design a game. I do know that if notch could put out so much content while working another job without introducing 5 trillion bugs then he can definitely do better than he is now.
Lastly yes he has said he would work on the engine more, but if anything the engine has gotten worse and the updates never seem to be tested before hand because they contain ridiculous bugs or performance drops.
Notch is not god.
Notch has done a great job and made a fantastic game.
Notch has not been keeping up to the same standard, and not even keeping up to a reasonable standard.
Its such a breath of fresh air to see more and more of the community slowly realizing they are being screwed.
Really? I mean, really?
THEY PAID $15!
Seriously, I've had crappy meals that cost more than that! Do you picket outside restaurants and yell at everyone else inside that they're "getting screwed" too?

Wooh, this thread is a lot to read through.
Anyways my input is this:
Notch did make minecraft, and though it contains many unoriginal concepts, it is still fun.
So yeah, props to Notch for garnering attention to a fun game.
The modders also get props, for the constant stream of content they add to minecraft.
Like a guy a couple posts said, Notch has, unfortunately, gotten lazy.
Thing is, because it's in development, I think it's OK to criticize Notch's work ethic, but not entirely.
I mean, other games (sometimes) spend long periods of time in development too.
Thing is people need to have patience, like now, BUT, in the case of Minecraft it has gone on a bit too long.
It's not even the slowness of Notch's work that angers me. It's that he's doing other ****.
Now, I would say that modders are sort of on-par with Notch. He provided the structure (Not willingly, through API or anything, but regardless he provided it) And they added content.
Seems kind of like a give-take thing if you ask me. (If it weren't for Notch's work ethic)
To anybody talking about how the money makes no difference, you are right and wrong. You argue that those who "complain about a game having bugs" don't realize it's in Beta. But MC has way to many bugs than it honestly should. In addition, yes it's only $15, but It's "money" no matter what way you look at it. And if I pay for a game, even if it's in development, I expect a damn game to be developed. If he pushed out development it'd be fine. But he isn't.
I mean, by all means complain about Notch, but you know, realize that it's just complaints themselves that are warranted.
tl;dr: Basically, notch is "alright" but his ethic sucks. And modders are cool, but they didn't make the core of the game.

What does that matter? That's like if you bought a piece of **** for $15, and then if someone asks you why you paid $15 for **** yelling, "WOW IT'S ONLY $15 WHAT ARE YOU POOR OR SOMETHING?".
Yes, Notch has a half-moved-into office with 6 people MAX working on Minecraft. Modders, as a whole, are probs a hundred people. Of course they're making more things.

The bigger question is, why did you pay $15 for ****? It's not like there isn't a forum full of people who hate minecraft and all it stands for who could have warned you away.
That said, I doubt that anyone here, even the people who seem to hate Notch with all their hearts, would say that Minecraft is ****. If anything, it's because they like the game that they complain. They like Minecraft and want more of it. My point is that claiming you're getting ripped off when you got a good product just because you're not getting more is, well, wrong. You bought the product as-is, you were completely capable of knowing what you were getting into (hell, creative was free) and if you made the wrong choice and regret it, fine. Just don't take it out on the rest of us.

It is definitely not what I perceive to be the priority. I am quite content to let notch just do his thing, I mean I didn't even expect survival mode when I bought the game. I just think its unreasonable to worship notch the way most of the people on these forums seem to.

Ok then, let's call it a magic piece of **** that the salesman promises you will print out money after you buy it. You get a few dollars in the first couple months after you buy it, but then it stops making money. But woah dude, it was still only $15, right?
But hey, it seems notch's money printing **** has been working just fine.

I know there was a redesign so maybe it used to be different, but that prepurchase page doesn't even say anything about getting regular updates.
Again, you knew what you were getting into, and you're getting exactly what was promised. (And more!)
Edit: Entirely unrelated, but you signed up just to reply to me? I'm flattered, I think :smile.gif:

You are also paying for the full game when it is released. At this rate, who knows how long that will be from now.
Actually... No, I'm not. :smile.gif:
Neither is anyone else who's been around long enough for many of these complaints about content pacing and reduced updates compared to earlier release schedules to be a point of contention.
So what exactly is your point?
The point of that post obviously went completely over your head. I mean that when you purchase the game, that purchase not only includes the current build of the game, but also the full game when it releases and any content that contains. So, by not updating that game at all, Notch is further delaying the release date of the full game. Of course, unless he just releases the game as is and never works for the rest of his life and lives off the money he would have conned everyone out of.

Because, personally, when I rip a bunch of people off and have a ton of their money I never intend to do anything with, I know that the first thing I do is start a company and employ a bunch of people to work on that thing I said I'd do all along.
Seriously, do you really believe you got ripped off, or are you playing devil's advocate here?

That was a hypothetical situation, and an unlikely one. And I said the money he WOULD have conned everyone out of, not that he's conning people now.

Notch has stated, MULTIPLE TIMES, that the focus after the Halloween update would be core SMP engine work to get it working and push into Beta. He said that content would be practically non-existant while he focused on that.
Where are we now? In Beta with generally working SMP that's come on leaps and bounds from where it was.
With content round the corner including mobs and dyes and who knows what else.
However much people seem to think that Notch can just grab mods and stuff them into the game willy nilly regardless of issues with tech, balance and legality, it's NOT that easy. The only thing that's easy is seeing just how little most of the community completely fails to understand the logistics and work flow of running a legitimate project like this as opposed to just hacking stuff in to an already existing game/engine.
Where are we at with SMP? Well, we have actual health, we have MOBS, and he fixed some bugs. Oh yeah, and he bugged it straight to hell with brand new glitches and bugs. Ok, well, we may be better off than October, but come on, a health/monster system and adding/removing a few bugs? THATS what a team of 7(?) people working on one indi e game can do in a span of 3 months? What were they doing for the other 80% of that time?
not saying he can just grab them and put them in willy nilly. I'm saying to actually LISTEN to the suggestions forum, and to actually get off his ass and MAKE some of those suggestions, instead of letting the forum be a metaphorical circle-jerk of Minecraft fans hoping that Notch will see their idea, which inevitably WON'T happen.
i remember his update path was having working monsters out by august 30th. we got non glitchy monsters in november.
Yes, you do have a point there. But modders are, well, a lot more numerous than the developers at Mojang. Notch could just release official mod support and everyone would be quite happy. I'll just keep waiting.

Hey, try Red Eclipse. It's a free online shooter. It's shweet.
Modders have been completely out-doing Notch in updates. Modders, single individuals, without any other help, have made dozens of MOBs. MOBs that you can ride, and actually WANT to ride. MOBs in the water. They have made paints, months before Notch even planned to. They have made dozens of new crafting recipes, new blocks, and new ores. They have made the Nether actually worth a damn to visit.
Heres a list of fully-functioning, non-buggy mods:
A Minimap
Birds
Ogres
Tower dungeons
Dyes/Paints
Fixing snow
Boomerangs
Ambient Occulsion
Fixes For HD Textures
Lions
Bears
Handheld torches
Humans
Dragons
Wolves
Horses
Ogres that break blocks
WEREWOLVES
Herobrine
Rogues
Elves
Hunters
Wanderers
Archers
Knights
The list goes on.
Notch, on the other hand, who has an entire office full of programmers, artists, marketers, etc. has given us in the last two months:
*a custom deadmau5 skin (only for deadmau5)
*capes
*(hopefully) a water mob
*(hopefully) paints
*throwing an egg can maybe get you a chicken
*leaf decay
*a ****-ton of bugs
Notch needs to actually DO something with his damn game, cause these modders are making him out to be pretty damn lazy.
And now, I guess I wait for the ****-storm of Notch-Defenders telling me if I don't like the game to not play it.
Most modders have something called TIME, Notch has a life, not saying modders don't. But Notch has other things to do, and less time. And that ''office'' you're talking about isn't Microsoft, it only has 5-10 people in it. And if you think those updates are SO amazing download them. Also note that Notch didn't plan on the game getting this popular. So he didn't care for thinking about popping updates out the ass.

Well now people can't give the beta excuse for why it's so buggy. Or they can still.
Dangit. So the correct argument is "Why'd you buy ****?". If you're unsatisfied, you're just screwed, sadly. There's nothing you can do about it.
