Maybe Notch just WANTS you to think that he isn't doing anything productive, while in reality he is spending 23.5 hours a day developing a secret update that will fix every bug and includes all of the 10, 000 suggestions he gets every day. The date this update will be released is based upon the results of a random number generator.
That's my personal view, and it makes me happy :smile.gif:
Heeeyyy I read the first page, and it all seemed like very valid points
We did pay for it, but its still in Beta, im sure in good time the game will take a few steps,
I just joined and everything seems to be working pretty well, its fantastic
But i can get where you are coming from, Notch does really owe you, (the people who have been here since alpha) something more, Its now up to 25 dollars (according to my cousin) so with prices like that, i really expect something more to come of the game.
As long as it doesnt end up in the hands of some massive corporation where it gets hung up and beaten to death, ill be happy
I do agree with some of the points made here. I highly recommend Notch hire some more programmers to help him work on Minecraft. Since the game has become so popular now, there is a lot of demand for quality and well-tested updates. I think whatever money Notch invests in new programmers would be reimbursed due to higher opinion of the work being done leading to more sales, etc.
No matter what anyone's opinion on Notch's decisions, there's one simple fact that quickly becomes the only fact that matters:
If Notch does not hire a proper team of full time skilled programmers and artists, and soon, then someone else will make a similar game or clone that will be bigger, better, etc. And then it will be game over for Minecraft.
Competition is the end of the story if these are the rules Notch insists on playing by. So get on it Notch!
Please bear my poor English as it's not my first but let me assure you, more people working on MC may not be what you guys really want. As more and more people work on a project the colour and flavour of the game also shift, making it a totally different game. WoW is one good example. Since core developers of the Blizzard left and replaced by countless employees from other games like EQ, the game changed drastically in a way that's decent but feels totally different. Same thing can be said to all the great projects that were taken over by EA games. I'd much prefer a several of the talented people who share the same vision as Notch developping MC rather than hiring many people who would only try to maximize profit which is what a corporation does. I think the one programmer Notch has hired is a step in the right direction.
Also the good thing about MC being more of a hobby than a product is that it will be developped purely for fun rather than profit, making the development process long and consistant yet very entertaining. You will not get patch every month, but nor should you pay $30 every year for another expension or $10 for DLC every 3 month. You can expect MC to be developped over at least a few years and will have hellot of fun during the process trying new things every now and then.
The countless hours that I spent in MC and mores to come, I think $20 is money very well spent. Seriously there are so many crappy games that costs you $40 and entertains you for about 10 hours nowadays. I'm simply happy Notch keeps perfecting the game as his hobby. If MC gets too greedy and out of control, it will no longer be the game I liked.
First of all let me just start this out by saying the OP is a ****ing idiot (as if that wasn't already obvious). Now despite this fact, the op still has a point regardless of the pathetic and really unnecessarily long as well as infuriatingly moronic way this person expressed said point. Notch has been slacking completely and really is a narcissistic **** for charging for this incomplete "game" in the first place. Really I don't think he has a plan to even finish it. But that isn't important, the fact of the matter is that he has no reason to. We have no choice in the matter, he is a millionaire, he could just stop work on the project completely and no legal implications could come upon him for this. Really I suspect he is only working on it due to his own personal interest and pride in it, if he really cared enough to release it in such a manner that would be considered acceptable given his current economic position much more of this would be released. In conclusion despite all of your feelings of being short-changed we have no legal right to anything excluding what we purchased directly which was that version and any versions superseding it, no final product was ever promised to us, therefore you all can all go QQ some more.
Personally I prefer dwarf fortress, its free and the person programming it actually cares about his playerbase and really is dedicated to the development of the game. Not to mention it is a better game when you get right down to it.
Mod edit: The harsh insults at the beginning of this post were entirely unnecessary, warning issued.

Slightly off topic, all the people in this thread finally stirred me enough to go and download dwarf fortress. I'm not really sure what to do though. It's pretty damn hard to figure out.
All of you are whining babies. The man cant work on a game 24/7. The game is nowhere near release yet. If you want a fully developed game to play with regular updates , go play TF2.
it's kind of his job to work on a game, you know... we're paying him to do it. We bought the alpha/beta version which means he is working on it, so we are pretty much paying for the game and his work. When he doesn't work we only get essentialy half of what we payed for. So, yes he can't work on it 24/7 but since it made him rich, it should be a big concern for him to work on this game.

Dude...its in Beta, you knew that when you bought the game, now calm down,
You're the one QQ about how you paid for a game you dont think is done, and guess what it isnt, its still a long way out, what you paid for was a beta. itll be done soon enough, and of course there are going to be problems and currently theres one person, and from what ive read Notch does care about the community, but there is no possible way to make every single person happen
Now if you like Dwarven Fortess better go play that, and let us enjoy Minecraft,
Kthanxbai
I read the OP, and some of the followup. I agree that it would be nice to see an uptick in updates and a general increase in reliability. The beta still definitely has some quirks.
But honestly I've spent more money on finished commercial games that were more unstable and less fun. If development grinds to a halt tomorrow, I'll still count it as money well spent.
I find it weird to see how much emotional energy people can invest in armchair quarterbacking a game that was advertised as unfinished when they bought it. That amount of passion is a credit to how great the game is. But seriously guys! Don't forget that it's supposed to be fun!
Notch needs to quit playing half life and start working on minecraft. If I made 13 million dollers I would defintly want to make more, not throw it away for nothing.
Also, you can't say "It's beta, we are supposed to test the game." That would be correct if the game was free, but we payed $14-21 dollers for the game. We deserve a game, not a peice of broken java.
Excuse me for any grammatical error I make in this post.
Wow can't believe I actually read all 7 pages of this thread.
Anyhow, I pretty much agree with the OP and with some of the people defending notch.
It's true that it is frustrating that the recent updates have been actually quite slow. I haven't been able to see any major updates since the Halloween update other than that beta release (I'm assuming that beta release was a major update in the sense that many of his codes have changed, if I read the other topics right). I personally would like it if Notch himself picked up the pace and added a lot more content. Don't get me wrong, I love Minecraft and I do realize that I bought the game as it was back then and am happy with the updates. However, it is frustrating nonetheless to see so much potential be wasted.
However, I do agree that Notch doesn't have any more incentive to work on the game. If there is one, it's the possibility of making a lot more money by improving the game and getting the "potential customers" (the other 70% was it? from the tweet he put out) to finally give in to buying Minecraft. Also, another benefit might be for fame which would give him more credit for his other projects. Other than that, however, I don't see any other reasons for improving it. I mean he already won bunch of awards, made millions of dollars, and pretty much became famous. In addition, there is no pressure on him because there is no legal bindings, no responsibilities (its his game, he can do whatever he wants and he also added the disclaimer that you are buying the game as it is. If you say that its his responsibility because he is now in business, I still think that the disclaimer absolves him of any responsibilities regardless of whether he is now in business or not), and many people still enjoy it as it is.
I agree that this development takes a long time and in addition as long as Notch updates it even once a year, he is still keeping the promise that he will try to add new content. But I must agree that it can get frustrating that he isn't updating vigorously as he used to. And therefore I would love to see Notch become more serious about Minecraft and start working on it more vigorously as he used to, or Minecraft might just die and fall into the hands of the modders, who probably would love it.
tl;dr version: I like Minecraft, but am frustrated as well that no new major updates are coming in. However, we can't do anything about it because Notch can do whatever he wants with his game because its his. I hope he can come to his senses and speed it up just slightly. Probably a horrible shortened version but that sums it up.
The cost for this game was nothing when I bought it, so I don't really feel the need to complain. I just think it's wrong to come with all these accusations and demands.
Just be patient. It's not like he's going to abandon us and run away with all our money. I agree, it would've been nice to have some new content more often, but it doesn't really bother me that much. I am convinced we'll be getting what he promised us.
Best part is how the OP becomes more and more true as time goes on, and the fears are slowly becoming realities.
Its to bad, the game has so much going for it, so much can be done, it COULD be so much more amazing than it already is, and my heart aches at how i know it will never come to be that awsome..
I believe a lot of people were sold on the potential of MineCraft like I was, rather than what it already did.
You know, I see this sentiment a lot here and on other threads. It's usually more in the form of "Notch hasn't updated except for (things he's updated) and I don't like those."
The problem is: Other people did. And if Notch adds something you like, there are going to be other people who are just as entitled to a product as you are that hate it.
In short, the potential of Minecraft is different for everyone. With (the coming) proper mod API everyone can make Minecraft live up to their particular ideal of what it should be. While many people think that X or Y feature should be built-in to the game rather than a mod, keep in mind that, again, others hate the idea. Modding and/or the eventual open-sourcing of the game let people put in mutually exclusive features. If you like the idea of NPC villages to visit, you can do it, and it won't interfere with the person who likes the feel of a desolate world.
Stick in there. You already paid, after all, you have nothing to lose :smile.gif:
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
This forum ticked me off so much I went to random.org and set my password to something I'll never be able to remember, then switched my password reset to a throwaway.
That's my personal view, and it makes me happy :smile.gif:
Me too :biggrin.gif:

Actually people have been whining in this one for over a week.
My Spigot/CraftBukkit plugins:
TallNether - Generate a 256-block high nether
FarLandsAgain - Restores the Far Lands
User: *BOOM* You're dead.
Cleverbot: I divide by zero and come back as an angel ninja.
