Alot of people seem to be confused as to what we are. We are not consumers, we are not investors, we are not armchair devs, we are beta testers that have preordered the game. We make it easier for notch to find out how to make the game better. we are not entitled to anything, not a single thing. we are not even entitled to a playable game because if we report that the game is unplayable for us. Guess what? we are doing our job as a beta testers.
Notch is not going to hire people to test patches before their released, we are the ones that test the patches.
Once the FINAL FINISHED version is realesed then yes. we are entitled to a working game that isnt buggy. Guess which is the best way to make sure that happens? politely reporting problems in the game.
There is absolutely no reason to flame notch. Find a bug that makes the game unplayable? report it in a polite manner and notch will fix it shortly. Find something that could be changed? say how it could be changed for the better.
Sometimes i think people have little to no perspective.Notch isnt going to want to help the people that are trying to burn him at the stake. also yah notch makes alot of money, but guess what he has (gasp) other things to spend his money on besides Minecraft like, and this is just off the top of my head, basic needs, advanced needs, wages, office equipment, a bunch of legal mumbo jumbo that i dont care to read about, and taxes.
oh and its a myth that Notch has ever made a promise he didnt keep. read any blog or twitter he says things he WOULD LIKE TO DO.
my point is that we arent entitled to anything, flaming notch never gets anything done, and the best way to actually improve the game is to do our job as beta testers in a polite and respectful manner.
It's unfortunate that a well thought out post such as yours will just go unnoticed. While even if 100% of your points were factual (which I believe you pretty much nailed it), It really doesn't do much good. You can't change a community, you can't make them see the light. They just don't care, they only think about themselves. They want things, they want them now.. their way. They believe they're entitled to so much, it's foolish.
*claps* Thank you... It pains me to see all the whining on the forums... There is a reason why it is called beta. Notch is great at what he does, but everyone makes mistakes.
They need some section in the forums where everyone that doesn't feel like a complete whiner can go without dealing with the crybabies. No, I don't mean a section with fanboys.. don't confuse the two. A board where constructive criticism and a real place to discuss bugs/problems. As elitist as it sounds, it sure would be nice. >_>
I completely agree with you. The game was just recently still in alpha for the love of god, I've played alphas that were much worse than minecraft has ever been. I think a lot of people got the idea that alpha meant "released soon" like it was a short process. It isn't, not if you want a quality product. That's the thing, Notch could probably rush it out but people would just complain that the final product sucked. Yeah, of course it did, you jerks. You demanded results before it was ready.
Epic thread is Epic.
Notch can't find ALL of the bugs, and that's why we (or at least I) pre-ordered the game. To help him find more bugs to make the game better.
I'm pretty thankful that Notch even put in the rare secret that we are all looking for.
Secret's been found, my friend. The aforementioned "something very rare" is a deadmau5 skin. Before it was discovered, there was much doubt as to whether it really existed or not. User-made hoaxes were created and released onto the Minecraft Forums, provoking an outlash of anger from players. http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Beta http://twitter.com/notch/status/17306923489566720
Guess what? we are doing our job as a beta testers.
This is my favorite part. I actually feel so much better about this situation now. We are actually testing a game in progress! We're actually beta testers! I see the light!
Thank you so much. for you, and some

Manly blood is both highly acidic AND highly basic, but I'm glad to see you're paying attention.
I agree with the OP 100%. Its a sad fact that it will not change anything however as you obiviously pointed, the game is a beta and as with a beta it all happens.
Any thing with a large community will always have people complain. I highly doubt notch pays any attention to the random stupid noise in the forum. I would guess he skims it from time to time and may have some higher level mods report general community feelings and high points but its just a waste of time to be honest aside from looking for bugs.
The funny thing is that all the people who complain constantly will totally forget about it next week, or after the next patch or 3-6 months from now when they are playing a far more feature enriched game. Although its nice to see new features, you have to look at how much has been done since 12 months ago. Massive amounts of stuff have been done. The funny thing about game programming is often times the things that take the most time, are the most important, yet to the end user may show little progress and the things that are most noticeable sometimes take very little time. But the important time consuming stuff is very crucial on the back end.
Please note that when you buy the game, you're paying for the game as it is right now!
So while the game is in Beta and we can't expect it to be perfect, we are customers and beta testers at the same time. Whenever money is handed over people have a right to complain, but it doesn't mean that they should go overboard or that anyone will listen to them.
You've articulated this better than I ever could have. It seems like so many people forget that the product they're buying is, by nature, going to have lots of flaws in it. By buying this game, you're accepting the responsibility for reporting problems and bugs that you find (preferably in a mature way.)

TBH I think Notch should have saw that coming
Yeah. The whining is unfortunate, but it became inevitable when Notch opened up the testing to everybody.
That's not to say that open testing wasn't a good idea, but you have to take the good with the bad.

actually i was talking about the hoaxes about what the rare thing was.
Your points all make sense. However... the whole alpha thing was to test the product, yes. But it was also sort of a demo that helped the game get many sales. This was sort of a win-win situation. Notch made money that helped fund the development of minecraft and the masses could play his game. Except that the game was only in alpha then and beta now. Remember, minecraft was developed by an indie companie and as such I believe that their alpha was their advertising or a significant part of it (think of it as a very early demo if you will). If they were EA or Microsoft, they would not need to do something like this. Having a playable alpha was also done in another indie game (Natural selection 2). It's not something very new.
Most people didn't realise this. They expected a stable game that would just keep adding more content. they expected the beta to be something big. They were wrong. I can't really blame them for expecting a playable game. After all, at least some of them spread the word of minecraft around and assisted Notch by making his product more popular. You are blending all the 'whiners' into a single group. Some people simply want to have the alpha back, so they can play with less bugs. Also, after playing a generally stable version of minecraft then being thrown into a buggier version is sure to **** some people off. I doubt it would take much work to allow them to just play the alpha while the beta is being worked on. I could be wrong though, I'm no programmer.
However, there was another group of people who wanted more content. I can understand the need to stabilise the system. However, if you read the agreement prior to the actual purchase of the game, Notch stated he could simply walk out on minecraft at any time and he would not be held responsible. I don't know Notch so I can't speak for or against him. This statement that he made could however cause some people to panic. I can't blame them.
I think it's the general community overreaction, rudeness and the inability to use a search function that caused most of the hoo-hah you're seeing. I can see why you're defending Notch. However, some people who are complaining have valid points and I don't think discounting them on some basis of 'oh another whiner' is a good idea. Someone should probably compile some sort of wish list from each branch of thought or perhaps have some place or some general topic to post constructive criticism.
I thank you (OP) for creating this thread though. Well most here take the ability to play minecraft as a given, you have understood the fact that this is a beta. Hopefully, more people will see your post and realise this.

girr forum snacked on my post.
Ive read that and what it is saying is this. If you preorder minecraft, because your helping fund development, we will let you test the alpha and beta versions of this game. Not once did it hint that you would be playing a complete, non buggy, or even workable version.
Also finding loopholes in words is such a faulty base for an argument for instance.
Purchase now's and right now's exclamation marks look alot like towers. then at the words "HERES WHAT YOU GET" there are two dots. like the ruins of towers. OMG!! CONSPIRACY!!!
Just a quick question. How do I report or make a suggestion to Notch directly instead of going through this forum? I know from his post, he said he's on irc channel but I have no idea what an irc is and how to connect to it.

From what I know, his twitter and email are somewhat reliable means of contacting him. Both can be found on the minecraft home page.
