I know this is a problem with the game, I don't know how its caused but on this computer, the one I'm on. it has 2 profiles, Admin, then a "alternate" with my Alternate account the game is darker then it should be, its like the light level on All blocks was decreased by 5. where on my admin account its 100% fine. this is really annoying but I'm guessing its something to do with permissions. i don't know what it is but I've been investigating. ill update this post if i get anything working.

Do what I do, just place torches all over the place. Since charcoal became available, there's literally no excuse not to make hundreds of them.
dude it gets annoying having to place torchs 1 block away from them just to light a small hallway, and if your not having this problem then you dont know what its like. also anyone who reads this stop putting the torchs comments :sleep.gif: it would require like stacks of torchs just to light up a small room! its REALY frustrating
=Torch
=Dark wall
Partially Dark
Actually lit
also at night time u can atleast see enough to move around the landscape at night but with this Glitch its impossible, its something to do wwith either pemissions or being marked as read only. thats what i think.
If torches emitted light as you carried them, this wouldn't be an issue.
This. OMG, this. Third reply to the thread, made back in November, and this sums it up.
Even if you couldn't use a weapon or tool because you were holding the torch, just being able to walk around with a light would be immensely helpful, and actually MORE realistic.
For example, I hate having to drop torches every few feet to see around a new cave, just to have to pick them all back up if there's nothing of interest in there.
Frosty Bran all the torches that where placed before the update and those in your inventory and chests will change to the lantern.
Basically, the torches that rest enlighted will be replaced by the lanterns. So you will not lost any yota of light that you already placed in your maps. Technically, it's the torches that are the new (temporary) light source.
mmhmmm I was talking about the new torches [that I read on these forums are already in the game code, just not being used until, well balance is my guess] wont just despawn when the timer/durability on them hits 0, they'll do something like redstone torches that turn off, only you turn them on with probably flint and steel. and then you'll have X RL minutes before they burn out. I'd bet something like 1 or 2 in game days worth, maybe more if they have problems with them burning out fast. and its Frosty_brand, cause I forgot the pass to my Frostbrand account

Wait, if the Nether is where the damned go, what happens to the things you kill in the Nether?

Sorry dude, but if you're going to ***** and moan because level 4 light is too dark that you can't see, you either need to delete the game, or turn up your gamma. Level 4 is plenty bright.
That said, minecraft never hits true, complete darkness. I've sealed myself off sometimes in a tiny room with no light source and can see a block if it happens to be right in front of my face. If your nights are too dark to see, you need to turn up your computer monitor's brightness.
This is where you are wrong. On Ubuntu this is true for me, on OSX it is ALOT darker and you can't see anything unless it is day time.
Nighttime in areas exposed to the outdoors is a bit darker than it should be for a full moon in the open, but it's not *that* bad. If there's a torch or other light source anywhere in 8-10 blocks of me it's plenty to navigate around and even build to some degree. I actually have proper gamma, brightness and monitor calibration so things like low light tend to be "darker" on my system than for many people too.
Alternatively, go eat some carrots; it could just be your night vision sucks.

I like how we spend 8 pages of the thread concluding that it's compatibility issue, then people go ahead and ignore it because they can't be bothered to read previous posts.
ATTENTION EVERYBODY
It has been determined that this is a compatibility issue.
Some computers have the night too bright at the correct brightness and gamma settings.
Some computers have the night just right at the correct brightness and gamma settings.
Some computers have the night too dark at the correct brightness and gamma settings.
What needs to be done is for there to be a gamma slider bar.
Most every other game has a gamma slider bar. This one needs one.
Sounds like people with cheap LCD monitors that have bad contrast ratios, the game is fine if anything it is too bright at night, and there is a mod for hand held torches if you can't handle it.
I agree with the OP but maybe for different issues. Since 1.3 we got the cool Lighting.. looks great in the open sun - but caves are terribly dark even with torches.. my biggest problem is seeing what kind of block it is on the ceiling. I can almost tell if its iron, diamond, or redstone but coal or earth is mostly undetectable. Changing up the texture sometimes helps.
I think all made light sources should be 1 block range longer in giving out light. With the new lighting maybe tone down the "corner" shadows a little.. make it less obvious. Lamps are badly needed, even one that doesn't give light in all directions but instead projects light for a considerable distance.. like 20 blocks or so. With the new Lighting scheme I either need to toggle it off when mining.. or set up twice the number of torches.

This!
I have a correctly tuned monitor, decent new one and it is actually too bright. You don't need a single torch to see at all.

This has already been the consensus.
You have to see the stars and things to get the light boost. But then, the games lags too much for me.
Sometimes I can't see anything. Sometimes I can see monsters just wandering.
If I can't see, I just put torches around my tree and I just wait out the night With my bow an arrow.
Build during day.
Make torches.
Go out to the middle of nowhere, wait until night...
Not to mention night ads that gameplay feature...HARD TO SEE. Part of the reason it's DANGEROUS.
