I want too that this thread goes in a logic direction like kahncaroline said.
I think I'll post the thread link in the NOTCH world.
This is a serious matter. This is a programming matter and not and ingame matter.
And if you just take the time to read all post, a game where some gamers can see from 3 blocs to gamers that see to 50 or 60 blocs is a programming matter.
Does anybody want to change to another thread and begining to bring a really logic solution?
It's crazy people completely ignore issues just because it works for them.
There are a lot of players who are having this problem. Just because you're not experiencing any problems doesn't mean it's our fault and it shouldn't be acknowledged. They have addressed it themselves - it's not our problem.
And you can say "well, you're ignoring options as well" - such as - 'use torches', 'wait until daytime', 'buy a new monitor'. It's not that we're ignoring them, rather those are not proper solutions. The torches don't light up as much as they should (for us), sitting in darkness waiting for daytime will take far too long.. and buying a new monitor shouldn't be even be considered when it's not our problem.
It's crazy people completely ignore issues just because it works for them.
So if you have a problem with minecraft, that has never or will never affect me, i should complain to notch for you?
No.
But you should also not call us idiots because the game has a bug that affects us and not you.
Also, you should not attempt to obfuscate the real problem and get in the way of getting this bug fixed.
The issue does not affect you, and the fix we are requesting will also NOT affect you. So why are you posting to this thread to argue with us?? If you really feel the need to post, a simple, "I am not affected" should suffice.

All I want is for people to be considerate.
I'm not saying to go out and complain, tweet, flood the board with posts saying to fix this.. what I'm wanting is for people to at least acknowledge the issue instead of the "welp, no problems here. No need to fix it." attitude that a few have shown in this thread.
+1 for "held torches giving off light", then everyone's happy. If you like Stygian gloom, don't carry a torch. If you like not bumping into things, you have a solution. :tongue.gif:
Hello. I started playing Minecraft yesterday. I was quite dismayed when it became night, as literally the only things that I could see at night were the stars and moon. Otherwise, everything was an indistinguishable black. I know I have a cheap LCD monitor with poor black discrimination, so I turned the brightness all the way up. There was no difference.
I usually turn the gamma up a bit on games to compensate for this, but there was no such option. I googled for a solution, and this was one of the results, so I thought I would weigh in here too.
So far I'm enjoying the game, but this is definitely my biggest complaint. I don't know if there's something I'm missing, but I have a lot of trouble finding coal, too. Yes, I'm using a wood pick on the gray blocks, but it still seems very rare.
I have no idea what you guys are talking about, as I make sure to follow the very strict curfew that the skeletons and creepers have set for me. I'm in my well lit base before the sun has vanished over the horizon. But other than that, I have no problem seeing monsters roaming in the distance from my base so maybe it just depends on how bright your monitor normally is? I just got a 20 inch uber bright lcd from walmart that I swear is going to burn my silhouette into the wall behind me and give me a severe tan.
Other than that, have you considered better time management for your day? I do all my outside stuff like chopping trees, exploring, and building projects during the day and all my mining, in base building projects, and crafting at night so time goes by pretty fast.

It's about the fact that some computers or monitors can't have a good render of the darkness/brightness. The solution is obviously a brightness/gamma bar. Those who don't want to change anything still gets what they have now and those who can't adjust their brightness correctly will have the power to modify the parapeters to fit them with the computer in the game.
Yea, the night is dark. But what we realised through the topic, was that some peoples where only able to see like 4 blocks far. Everything was tried. Gamma correction, boosting brightness and gamma IN the computer, etc. And still, some people had that problem. We conclued that is a compatibility matter.
A game where you can see 10 blocks far when some people can only see 4 blocks far in not normal. Considering that everything was tried (it's a long thread!!), we end up to the conclusion that it was a compatibility problem. It's a detail every game have to deal with. Normally, almost all game have brightness/gamma adjustment in the option menu. It's not really funny to modify all the parameters of a computer to be able to play only one game.
So we are waiting for an update that will contain this options.
Always glad to see the anonymity of the Internet has not stopped people from being utterly rude. People ask for a gamma slider/option in-game and everyone wags their finger at them. I myself purchased two new monitors recently and the problem persists, albeit it's a smidgen lighter. I can crank up the settings on these monitors so I can run around at night and see everything, but doing so would require a "so bright you go blind" setting. It's not like I have a problem in other games seeing at night (most likely because those games either design around that aspect or include an optional brightness/gamma slider).
Apparently wanting a gamma slider is just too much to ask for.

Ok I'll explain it the more clearly possible.

And I can see in the dark. At least well enough to know that I won't fall off a nearby cliff.
The limited torch lifetime will not destroy the torch, you can reignite them with the flint and steel, so how should it work when you reach the end of the torch lifetime when holding it in your hand?
they start out unlit, and if you light one, it'll be a 1 stack item with a durability bar that turns it into an unlit torch when it hits 0.
makes sense to me anyway >_>

Disclaimer: ... but for all I know running this application will wreck your map or jump out of your screen and rape your dog.
Frosty Bran all the torches that where placed before the update and those in your inventory and chests will change to the lantern.
Basically, the torches that rest enlighted will be replaced by the lanterns. So you will not lost any yota of light that you already placed in your maps. Technically, it's the torches that are the new (temporary) light source.

@Adoravel: That is what I concluded in my post.
@tchic777: And about not needing torches aboveground if you implement gamma slider: Being able to see has nothing to do with monsters spawning.
Where are the mods?????

Thanks for the support... can't fathom why people on this thread refuse to understand the nature of this issue. Luckily, Mojang has acknowledged this problem as stated on their getsatisfaction site. Perhaps they'll actually fix it in a future update.
Thanks!
