Is the OP asking if there should be more iron or more TYPES of metals? I think we have enough types and just need to flesh out what we have. More uses for gold especially. I wouldn't mind more iron deposits or bigger ones (3 blocks... hrmph) or both. OR make some way of in-game searching for them. Like a metal detector that runs on red dust or something like that (using some gold parts :wink.gif:
I wouldn't mind more metals, or just more minerals in general. More minerals aren't absolutely necessary, but it would just make mining a bit more interesting. If nothing else, they would serve the function of decoration/building material. Like making metallic-looking reddish-orange blocks out of copper to decorate the town center or w/e.

I disapprove of the idea of adding more ore types. It would make the underground feel extremely crowded, I think. Unless, by adding a second best ore, you would simultaneously make diamonds, redstone and gold rarer.
Once biomes are added, it's fairly safe to assume that certain minerals will occur most commonly in certain biomes. So different minerals would naturally occur away from each other, eliminating the "crowded" problem and any need to make the current minerals more rare.
I think there should be more ore types. Like loads more, but make it so that you can only find certain ores in certain chunks or something.
Like making it hard to find iron in one place, and making copper easy and abundant to find in another.
I like variety.
There could be a item made with redstone or something that shows what types of ores are within 20 blocks below or above you, making mine placement an actual strategy.
