If MC goes Steam, I'd be very happy, especially if we get the option to merge our MC accounts into our Steam accounts.
All too often I see people nerdraging over a new, nice feature (or possible feature). I say good riddance to those who boycott the product, and hello to those who join because of it.
If minecraft goes steam an army of griefers will emerge. we already have enough griefers. we dont need them creating an army with ranks and a command chain that could destroy whole servers in minutes.

it will be just like surviving on hardest difficulty lowest fog for 7 IG days. except we wont even last 7 IG minutes. imagine.
= griefer
= city
they will form a creeper horde and destroy citys... kill thousands.
or just make a city underground below it and call it deep. x = city name... so you get DeepX
but the underground city isnt just a city. it is a coverup for a 25x25x25 tnt to nuke the city above.

I'm sorry, but I stopped comprehending your post a after you said "Imagine..."
But, Only bad thing about Steam is the new UI. It's damn good looking, but the stability suffers.
Also OP plays Garry's mod, most likely 10 - 12 years old.
Steam has sales ALL the time. I can't go into the store without seeing some awesome deal. A few months ago they had a huge summer sale with some things up to 75% off, and last winter season they had an awesome Christmas/New Years sale, almost EVERYTHING was on sale.
You forget the reason why I have Portal; Steam gave it out for free one day.
If Minecraft goes steam, i will definately go apeshit, and stop playing minecraft, and use thoose 14€ i saved away to gift my little sister the game for something else, like a Infiniminer donation. I will also be very sad.
Steam is a pile of crap and the only reason i got it is for Garrys mod.. And what if i use a flyhack in creative mode? Wouldnt the damn ****ing retarded cousin to Punkbuster(WIch is equally retarded) VAC instapermabadminban me so i can never play Gmod multiplayer again? Wouldnt Notch have to pay them his income? Like he gets 5% while they get the rest? Forcing him to stop investing in the game and live from random scrap he finds lying about in the street? That means lotsa dropped hearts too.
What i mean is, that Steam would be generally bad for both Notch and the whole playerbase, so to keep him from doing it, shouldnt we just say "Let it be or we are out"?
I really mean, why should Notch loose all his money to some fat ******* wich constantly looses his head in a flash game about intensive shoppers and wheelchair bums racing about in death traps?
I never understand misinformed ragekids who dislike steam this much.
Steam/valve are quite possibly the best thing that ever happened to gaming. Have you seen their multitudinous amount of sales? Not to mention the fact that your entire gaming collection is right there any time you need it. There are literally no downsides to steam, im thinking you got banned because you were stupid and hacked and got caught. Oh noes...

I recently bought heard about the game from indiegames.com downloaded the free classic edition and got hooked. When I went to buy the game (I didn't see the BIG "Buy Now" in the corner /facepalm), the first place I looked was Steam. I came across this thread which triggered the "Someone is wrong on the internet" (http://xkcd.com/386/). I think there is some confusion as to what DRM is and how it can negatively effect the purchaser.
I am with a lot of people who think many of the implementations of DRM are intrusive and poorly executed with little or no support. Securom, StarForce, Ubisoft/EA's always online requirement, etc and known to be poor executions of DRM without any recourse for the customer to object or return the software. While Steam has a DRM system based on pseudo-personalized application installation/management. Many of the issues with Steam are really with the developer implementing other methods of DRM that don't play well with others. A good example of this is Red Faction: Guerrilla and Microsoft's "Games for Windows Live" which had serious performance issues because of how it injected itself into the games interface. Steam has been the only company to offer me a refund after purchasing, installing and even playing the game. No, not every game you get from them has the ability to get a refund if not satisfied, but that is usually because the game is so heavily discounted. These are just some of the reasons why I support Steam and what they are trying to do.
I should also point out that VAC is not considered DRM and only deals with game related items that involve manipulating game interfaces where others are involved. Outside of the obvious aimbot, health and ammo cheats, it also makes sure you aren't cheating the achievement system on single player. What it doesn't do is prevent you from modding or cheating in single player modes as long as they don't effect how you interact with general community members in the game. In fact Valve has encouraged mods/gameplay redesigns that has helped bring like minded individuals together. Many indie developers got their start by creating mods for different games.
So in closing, this rant by the OP and others about Steam destroying the world and other hyperbolic nonsense is unfounded. Do you really think that I believe you have the developers welfare in mind with your objections? The questions about hacks/mods in relation to Creative Mode and VAC (which is primarily used for Valve games not other developer games) is again nonsense. I suspect that the objections to an anti-cheat system is more because someone wants to grief or cheat without repercussions.
Sorry for the reply in essay form...lol

Thanks a lot Notch. Now how am I supposed to get anything done?
i have nothing against steam, and even used to have an account.
Unfortunately, if minecraft does go steam i wont be able to play anymore because the university i go to blocks them.
my friends and i have had to stop playing WoW, league of legends, anything on steam, gulildwars, and several other games (not to mention x box live) because the danged university cant handle the traffic of a few thousand students on MMOs :sad.gif:
^this is the only valid reason i can think of to dislike the idea of minecraft going steam.
If he were to sell it on Steam, it's not like he'd release it exclusively on Steam. Many, if not most non-Valve games have both a Steam version and a standard version. So unless Notch were to push to make MC Steam-exclusive, there'd be absolutely nothing to worry about.
I'm not going to read all of this. Just wanted to put in my thoughts.
Steam is a EXCELLENT way for an Indie game to get attention. Sales for minecraft will soar into the heavens if Notch starts selling it on steam. It can only be a good thing for the development of the program. Hell, if it gets popular enough, who knows Valve might buy it and then the sky is the limit!
I love Steam. I would certainly stay.
My opinion is the same, so I'll just quote you. =)
Steam has done a lot of good by advertising indie games.
Hopefully it WILL go on steam! Can't wait to play on VAC punkbuster servers where hackers and anyone cheating with mappers, flying, ore finders and other tools instantly have their account banned from all multiplayer servers!
I hate Steam... it makes me buy games to much. I've spent over $1,000 on steam in like 3 years and have over 120 games. Its hard to say no to something like Dead Space for $5.10. I didn't even think Dead Space was a very good game but I still got my $5.10 worth of it.
I've even bought games I already have because I don't have to keep track of CD keys and media. The sales are great and there is something about a software sale that gets me. Honestly buying a bundle of games for like $40 is great. I'm getting a game I want for less then it normally costs, with all the benefits of steam and they are throwing in a handful or two of extra games for no cost to me. I think I got left for dead 2 for free because I bought a 4 pack and 3 of my friends paid me a little extra. They paid $7 each instead of $5...infact I got the game for free and made a $1 profit :tongue.gif:
Steam is great. Unless the game is brand new, half the time I can't find a game that is 1-2 years old in stores anymore. They have great sales, they keep track of your games, and they auto update - what more is there? As mentioned before, it's sometime hard to resist the sales when they offer games at 75% off. Over the holidays, I bought F.E.A.R. and the expansion packs for $5 - can't find that in any store. I think it would be great to see Minecraft on Steam.
I dislike Steam because it made my trying to play Portal a living hell. It had to update, install, open when I wanted to play Portal... If I had to wait for Steam to initialize, check for updates, download them, or tell me I can't play because I'm not connected to the Internet, I will follow the OP.
