Just wait until one griefer punches down a tree, builds a wooden pickaxe, mines into your base, steals two buckets, destroys the chests, furnaces, and crafting benches, floods your base, places signs saying "lol fag" everywhere, and leaves the server after waiting around just long enough to get your reaction.
Well, if that happens, then I ****ed up by not hiding my base as well as I should have. We all know that some griefing is going to exist in SMP, so we need to take measures against it. However, this doesn't mean that we need to use adminhax to take care of it. If a lone guy living in a fantasy setting like Minecraft decided to build something big like a castle or town, he could do ****-all about it because he's just one person. A group of raiders could sweep in and do just about anything that they want. The smart thing to do would be to make somewhere obscure to live so that every asshole who can stand on top of a hill can't find you.

Why not just play single player then? Much of the fun of Minecraft is building things, and one of the biggest benefits of SMP would be showing your work off to others. What's the point of even playing if you aren't building things afterall? The fighting system isn't that deep...
-Use your land claim flags to claim a portion of the forest
-Rescue parties, use them.
-Create tactics and strategies.
-Underground forests and back-up bases.
-Create a base in the sky, and use a water-elevator. Set up a security team and tell them to block the water elevator when someone untrusted is using it. This will damage or even kill the suspicious person.
-Take advantage of mob spawners.
-Obsidian.
-Create Cobblestone factories so going to caves at night is not needed.

Not to sound like a ****, but imo if you want to show off your CREATIONS you should do so in CREATIVE.

But I am. Just because I said obscure doesn't mean it's not something cool. I've hollowed out mountains and made elaborate underground dungeons, which are cool, yet they're also safe*. If I trust somebody enough, I'll tell them the location of my base. Hell, I have friends that I can't wait to work alongside with too, but I can still be careful.
*I know that there's still the chance of some jackoff digging into my base. It's still more safe then building towers and castles

If you want to show off your working creations, you need to do it on Survival. Plus, showing off the things you built isn't his reason to play SMP. Anyway, it is much more impressive in SMP than it would be in Creative, since you had to work to get everything there. SMP maps will be limited, so hiding will be harder as land won't be unlimited.

Alright. Name a multiplayer game other then SMP with a totally malleable environment where you can break into someone's fortress any way you want using tools that you had to create yourself, or the situation can be flipped and you have to create a base for yourself that would make it difficult to be found/infiltrated/destroyed.
The reason PVP in Minecraft is so interesting to me is because that it takes place in a sandbox environment.

Fair enough. Everyone wants to play the way they want to. It's just that imo if you don't make your structures hidden then it's your fault for expanding on the possibility of something bad happening to it.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't recall Notch saying that SMP will permanently be restricted to limited maps, I thought he said that there would be limited maps in the initial phases of SMP until he figures out how to code it correctly.
If you are hiding your base, then the whole point of multiplayer for you is so you can break into the bases of other people, kill them, or steal their resources. If so, your whole reason to play SMP over SSP is so you can kill others and mooch off of their work...

FFS GUYS Griefing is purposely doing the same thing to someone to cause them grief. Doing it out of need of resources or etc is not. what's so hard about this?

The current state of minecraft makes it far too hard to masturbate to, I have to build my own pornography pixel by pixel.

With the need of resources you could get yourself..."Raiding" is pointless if you would just spend the time gathering instead of being an ass...
I really hate how a good part of the minecraft community just wants to kill people, for the resources they could easily get themselves or not.

And I hate how people (like you) assume that just because some people are willing to be careful in lieu of setting rules that limit how we play. Just because I'm willing to deal with raiders doesn't mean I'm going to be a raider. I'd be lying if I said I'd never raid someone, because at some point of course I'd give it a shot. But that doesn't mean that I'd condemn myself to doing nothing but plundering. You paint us as wanting nothing but to destroy, where we/I just want the ability to destroy.

Hrmmm...I see what you're trying to say, but there STILL is a fine line between griefing and...errrr, not griefing. If you're just destroying people's things or stealing them just to steal them, without have a real use for them...Griefing. If there's reason behind it, not griefing. Stealing to survive? Not griefing. Stealing for no reason while expecting a ban? Griefing.
How will we separate griefers and normal players on our servers? Well, I think that'd be your call. I could see if someone has been stealing for a long time, not using what they've stolen. Those guys who are out just to ruin other people's fun = griefers.

Doesn't really help that there are people who want to do nothing but destroy.

We might as well put off this discussion until SMP comes out and we discover what the multiplayer environment will REALLY be like. I really don't think it will be as bad as everyone fears. Sure there will be the occasional jerk, but I think that the majority of the paying community would treat each other decently enough. (At least I hope so!)

Or a PvP server, especially since Notch is adding mod support.
