Hi! I'm new to the forums and to Minecraft, and I was playing today, exploring under an island I built my house on.
I stumbled upon a cavern that quite literally held a huge underground lake, and, talking to few other players on Skype, none of them have seen an underground lake of that scale. The water in it was crazy! I know it's randomly generated, but this 'waterslide' had me falling for five straight minutes. I have pictures! I guess this thread is for discussing the most surprising natural formations you've found in the world, and posting pictures if you have'm. :]
Here are two pictures of the cavern, and this isn't even a fraction of what I found down there.
Aside from that, the scariest thing I've seen in the environment was a black void at the bottom of a cave. I didn't jump down because I dropped a brick and it fell forever... So I screenshotted it and ran away.
Wow, that looks exciting! The water in my cave is a continuous waterslide, but yours is one that goes straight forward, Mine goes around in spirals. I like yours, it looks neat!
That's a big lava slide :tongue.gif:
I went tunneling myself and found one of almost the same caliber! I found an underground lava lake... And in that same cave there were about six more of them! But here's the only one I cared to picture.
Here is something I found not that long ago. I only took the one screenshot of it before I modified the cavern after building my house directly on top of it. Its extremely deep with several water and lava springs in it. It goes straight up to near the surface and probably about half way to the bottom of the map.
I like exploring best in minecraft so I can't wait for adventure mode.
I started underneath a HUGE overhang on a mountain, next to a surface cave (lots of exposed stone/ores) that gave me 3 stacks of coal and 1 stack of iron.
Oh, and my base is at the top of the mountain, in a little hole inside of it. I'm like a hobbit.
There's a small but possible chance that your map generator might have made a hole that leads to the bottom of the skybox... Which means OUTSIDE the map...

Fear the void of Death. I did.
Please share your interesting natural discoveries! I am very interested in this game, especially the shape of the natural Minecraft worlds.

I hope your future experiences continue to inspire the amazement this did.

edit: there:

EDIT: Latest one I ran into really, really confused me. I got lost almost immediately. Check out MC Escher's latest piece, MineCraft Caverns.
Merged double post to one post. Do not double post, thanks. /ez
