I came across this thread in a random Google search.
I can assure you that this is totally possible, though not easily (nothing is never easy *sad face*).
Look up "fragment shaders" and "deferred shading" (the latter is the glorious technique used by STALKER).
Texture loading techniques would definitely need to change though from the current shared texture sheet.
While I can respect the intentions of such a project, I don't think I would ever install it. For me, the simple graphics are enough to create a context around which my imagination can build the reality. The simplicity of the graphics is actually what draws me into the world so deeply.
Java would choke on this, as it has memory limits. It'd have to be C# or (more likely) C++, although I'd prefer C# since it would be easier to port to other platforms.
I don't know if that's true. If this were just a texture pack then the major factor would be VRAM.
I was trying to avoid doing that, since I wanted to keep it as close to the original as possible. But fine, I'll give it a shot.
I have a crystal image of what a creeper looks like to me but I can't draw it and I can't model it so I'm a bit ****ed when it comes to conveying it.

I'll pretend it was melted vanilla ice cream.
Hey, it was requested.
They're just materials, cubes in a blank room. I only showed them as prototypes. They're not worth posting.

Of course that means cutting out the lighting.
I just am.
I'll also add slopes on 1-block rises.
Not that this is a bad thing, Notch was responsible for almost everything actually fun about Wurm in the first place...
