Aidan's RP server, is, technicality, the very first survival multiplayer server.
Of course, it's not an official survival server, and it runs on the "Creative" gamemode, but it is a custom server with a very special mod that has 2 of the 3 main things in survival: Limited resources and crafting (the third one is health and fighting)
So, after playing on this server for a while i now know how the official survival multiplayer' will look like (roughly):
1. OH NO! We ran out of iron on the map!
Many have foreseen this, and some of you even had ideasof how to avoid this. The map has to be refreshed every week or so just to keep up with the player and their demand for important materials such as wood and iron. I doubt that even the infinite maps could fix this, since even "infinite" maps would have borders (to keep griefers from crashing the server).
2. No bad guys?
For some reason there are no "bad guys" - no thiefs, no dark knights, no rival kingdoms, nothing. Maybe it's just because everyone are friends with everyone, or the lack of weapons.
3.Villages: NO! Cities: YES!
The idea of small groups building their own village has taken a step forward: not only that there ARE groups of houses, this groups are quite large, even large enough to be called towns and cities, with skyscrapers and everything. This may be a result of how easy this is to gather resources with others and not alone, or maybe just because it's easy to find ore on OMEN generated maps. Whatever the reason may be, it is great. Not only that players are building their own houses (and own cave systems), they also build public places for the newbies, such as public resource storage and public crafting stations.

It takes around ten minutes of walking to create 5mb of map. So for this purpose let's say you've stored 2GB of your hard drive in reserve for your minecraft server. (If your HD can't afford it, you shouldn't be making a server anyway.) . It would take one person 4,000 minutes according to this, to fill up the map space that you want availiable. The server won't crash, as the real maximum is 8 times earth surface area, taking up 150K terrabytes. Anyway, 4K minutes is 66.6 hours of walking. So if there's three people out to destroy your HD space, it would take each of them spending almost 24 hours (22.2) individually to fill the 2GB up. An entire day, a WHOLE day of just WALKING on a minecraft server. I don't think anyone has the nerve. But of course, that doesn't mean they won't try, and it doesn't mean it'll only be just three people. So let's say that they do explore this mass of land, and you need more HD space than 2gb. The people expanding your map probably didn't make any better than simple huts to survive the night in. (Another good point, they won't do much walking outward in the night, so maybe increase the time needed by two.) . So the only real towns will be near the start of the map. I bet that notch, or somebody else, will make map editing tools that can prune it down to just the area that you want to keep.

There is no reason to worry.
hmmmm...
Maybe you're right, and if you're right, then we need minecarts
i loled.......
and this can just show some of the possibilites, you can judge what will happen base of of this, but you can get a idea
This things happened again and again and again.
I'm an active part of this server only in the few last days, but i'm entering and checking it out for more then 3-2 weeks (about when it was first created)
Since this does not have all the elements of what survival multiplayer will have it is in no way any correct conclusion of anything. Though i think the idea of the server is very neat and cool.. and i congrats you for it.
Dont try to to make it your own little research hub.. because correct research is done with all the correct elements involved not just a few that you pick.

No? Remember Cave Game...?
Look for RP Test Server. It sometimes comes on late at night and has material gathering, smelting, crafting, and old-school omen generated maps.
Raise my dragons please!!
