I hate Custom Servers. I feel that they ruin the creativity this game offers. They restrict you to a guest area, where you can't build anything awesome. Why? Because it will get griefed immediatly. It also restricts your freedom. They say its' to stop "Griefers". Now, I know epic builds are fun, thats where spawn jails come in. But really, Who doesnt like that suspense? You build a fort, but oh wait! You should add a moat for defense. In some cases its annoying and ruins the game (Giant fortress, palaces, huge builds Etc.). I feel that Custom Servers just ruin the game. They do not let you express your creativity. Wom ,for example, You have to go register on their site. Why should you have to go register on their site, Just to play minecraft? They make you get registered and logged, just because you want to play on their server. Im fine if you add simple edits (!8ball, !count, Etc.). But when major edits happen, It ruins everything.
This is just my opinion on Custom Servers.

Truly, nobody cares. But i have a custom server, It restricts people to a guest area and things rarely get griefed. You just go to crappy custom servers where the owner doesnt care. Try to find some with Good moderation.

I don't care for most custom servers, but most people today aren't using the normal server today because of all the fancy features and anti-grief measurements.
Maybe people like servers that are more secure and can do lots of cool things. Maybe they like servers that aren't written in languages which **** all over your computer. Maybe they want server side protection against hacks, because that is how it should be done. Maybe they don't want to wait for Notch to finish survival before getting some simple fixes to the creative mode server. Maybe people are programmers and this is what they do.

Become a member of the server if you want to build outside. Otherwise most servers allow you to look around. I think this is a fair deal here. They don't need to let you on and build in their server.

Well done sir, well done. Such a large wall of sarcasm is truly magnificent. You even had me fooled for a good amount of time and got me worked up.
That's the only incorrect part of your post.
Custom servers tend to somehow be less secure from what I have noticed.
Also marenkon, the "minor changes" of which you speak are actually server scripts, and not custom server software. Secondly, I agree with not wanting to have to register.
However, control limiters are like spawn jails, and you can look around. That of course makes them better.
I agree though that guest areas are more or less token measures.

I disagree with you, therefore you are wrong.
Quality of output = Skill * Effort
I find them as complete ********, banning griefers is the fun part when you are op.
That and denying the joiners freedom of the spawn jail, not doing your job, and not banning with less than an unreasonable doubt.. like lep, Chariot, ****ing unban me.
I've went ahead and launched three shitty custom servers because of this, to show how much i don't care.
One being a old similar version of MCSharp, one being Mynecraft, and one being MinerCPP. All without ops or rules and nearly blank maps.
Is this supposed to prove something?
It's suppose to show how much of an asshole i secretly am [/offtopic]
Not really, it's related to my opinion that i really couldn't care less with them but i am dissappointed that so many custom servers are shadowing over the original server software ,while i admit sure it's alot better as the old server software is old as dirt and all, and a cMss script could probably change that... But as-well, it's a infestation i say.
I agree that guest areas are annoying, but custom servers usually provide enough other benefits--/blb, water and lava, etc.--to outweigh the negatives. Also, a good programmer can add whatever features they want to a custom server, which isn't possible with the Notch's server.
Only thing I worry about is that Notch will update the network protocol, and half the servers on the server list will no longer work.
Hate to break up the nostalgia fest everyone is having. But registration on a site takes care of 95% of griefers. Most are too lazy to go past griefing a little guest area. I'm sorry that you're too lazy to do that, but I think it's a fair trade and totally worth the benefits.
Everyone knows that Vanilla > Custom Server.
Right Iguana?
I'll use Vanilla when it's a mini-project. But for custom-servers, I'll use it for like building a huge mansion something like that Richstanger... (whatever) ecrider built.

Soo. Let me get this straight you hate them because of the spawn jail? Because you cant spend 5 minute so of your time to build a simple house to be let outside? And if the guest area is all griefed up ask for it to be reset takes 5 seconds. And you dislike huge awe inspiring builds? And custom servers do have a edge over Vanilla a bit as they can hold more players some things can be done 10x faster or you can do impossible things like simulate /indev/ physics
Though I agree WoMs sign up or gtfo policy is dumb.

Well it depends on the programmer. I didn't cite any specific example, I just meant that if the programmer was good enough, it IS possible.
And yes, I hate this confusion between scripts and custom servers. They are entirely different.
