So it's not quite infinite.. Here's the pragmatic version
Instead of keeping track of sub-block locations and so, I just moved to 64 bit floating numbers for the positions. The physics break down (because of rounding errors) at about 16 million meters (blocks) away from the center of the map, so I’m going to put the upper limit at 15 million meters from the center.
(interestingly, the level generator breaks down at about 20 million meters, producing nothing but solid rock)
This means the map area is 30 million meters squared, or about 1.8 times the surface area of the earth.
The first person to make a 1:1 scale model of Sweden gets a free copy of the game! :-D
But Notch you need to have the game to play infdev!

A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add but when there is nothing left to take away.
Infinite or not. Those measurements are totally overkill. Everyone not satisfied with this can GT*O!
Thinking about it... who wants to try remodel... EARTH?

And like the baseless fabric of this vision, the cloud-capped towers, the gorgeous palaces, the solemn temples, the giant Screen itself, all of which we inherit shall dissolve. And, like an insubstantial pageant faded, leave not a byte behind.
30 million meters squared = 900 billion square meters.
Notch phrased it in relation to the length of the sides, as opposed to the overall areas.
My questions are:
1) Whether the map will "wrap", so we have a globe?
2) What the file size a fully-generated map is?
3) Will we be able to build as high as we will deep? I HATE not being able to build very high.
4) Will we be getting faster means of transport to traverse a "planet" 1.8 times the size of Earth?

Sounds good enough really. Can I start being all irrational and demanding about floating islands in infdev now? :tongue.gif:
or you hit one at 'terminal velocity' (Thanks Dlseth)
Velocity :tongue.gif:
Suggestion: If you smack onto the ground hard enough, you should leave a small crater on soft dirt/sand/gravel!
Would be fun to see dozens of small craters underneath a floating island.. :biggrin.gif:
Let's hope he doesn't add whales...
Hurry notch, you glorious bearded *******! - Kilbas
That'd look like this, I assume..
+1!
