What has Notch done with the ~ $40,000 that he's gotten for the game?
It's just a curiosity I've been having. I have never felt the game is worth its cost (especially considering that all paying members get is a pretty skin) and if none of that money goes back into the game's development then those that payed are SOL.
Damn para, When did you get here... xD, Making minecraft IS his job....
Oh, well that's dumb. You'd think that the game would be much further along if that was all he had to do and he's already been given a $40,000 down payment on it.
Btw, when you buy minecraft is there some sort of legal statement or document saying that the game is going to have X features? Because if he dropped it right now then "everything in the FUTURE" would be absolutely nothing. He could go as far as making the sky purple and then deciding that the game is finished.
It would make financial sense for Notch to have a paying job and to reinvest the purchases into the game. It just seems so strange to me as I came from a forum where people complained about paying for a finished product whereas here people pay for a much lower quality product before it is anywhere near completion.

It's not really his full job, he still has a normal job.
And because he lives in Sweden he pays like 56% tax, so he doesn't get all the money.
Oh and he bought a new Minecraft server for the level storage from some of the money, and then took a 3 week long vacation from more of the money. >.<
I myself come from Denmark and we have a plus +25% on all stuff imported from other places and a huge tax thats based on how much you earn (earning alot means you need to pay a high tax, while earning a little means you pay a small tax only)
And seeing the way it works it pretty great...
If i get sick, i get treated for free
If i get get retired, i get some money, for free
Plus we have:
Free schools
Free colleges
Free university
High taxes is good
Just seems stupid the second you have to pay them... But not the second you have to use them...
Just see at as you gave the swedish government 5 € which will perhaps go to improving the power supply in Notch's area, and thus helping him. Or to pay the police so they can shoot some terrorist before he kills a thousand people, or to save some sick child's life.

Notch pays around 55% total on the money earned (that includes tax and paypal fees) so he's made ~15,000 euros, then take away the ~200 euros per month for the server and that makes it about 14,000 which he has from this.
regarding your comment about it not going back into the development: Notch has quit his day job, well, he went from working full time to working a few days a week so he can fully focus on minecraft. He uses the money we've paid for his own rent, rental of the minecraft.net server and various other things. He hasn't just taken our money and ran, there is constant development going on with Minecraft.
even if he only did make the sky purple i would not care :biggrin.gif:
i like having a skin and i really don't care if he dose anything else :tongue.gif:
This is so weird. In the forums I came from (Phunland.com - now Algodoo.com) everyone whined and complained about having to pay for Algodoo when it came out. Phun was and is completely free while Algodoo only has a handful of features that Phun doesn't. Yet when Algodoo was released, quite a few users got upset and complained for a month or so about how greedy the developer had become (even though the program was made free for existing users of the forums).
And here is Minecraft - a game that you pay for before its even finished. And no one seems to care about what their money is being used for. Sure, it's Notch's money now, but when you make an investment you expect a return. In Phun/Algodoo you can build absolutely anything you can imagine, but in Minecraft you can just stack/remove blocks. So why would someone have a problem with paying for a product that is an improvement over an existing free product when others are fine with paying for a free product without any real gain?
And I have nothing against Notch or anyone who bought the game btw. It's just a curiosity I've been having. Maybe the age group or type of players that play Minecraft are just more willing to part with their money than Phun/Algodoo users.
And I know I've been quite redundant and repetitive here, but it's the point I've been coming to.
Maybe it's how Notch is independent and Algoryx is a company. Anti-corporatism has been arising.
Even when Emil was developing Phun by himself no one payed for the game. They just played and said, "I love it - good job". Do you think if Emil would have taken the initiative that people would have bought Phun before it was finished?

I don't know about phun, but I bought minecraft because Notch wanted me to. He set up purchases so he could focus on building minecraft into something more, for 9.95 I supported him through the development of minecraft, sustaining the current minecraft setup (minecraft.net) and because I wanted to have access to the future developments. Minecraft is still being developed and as a paid player I get to know I supported that and have early access :smile.gif:
You really kinda get on my nerves,
He needs the money to pay for things like food and water, and if hes doing a good job(which he is!!!) then why do you care where the money goes?
Paradigm 29, you have to realize that he is an INDIE developer, this is not a company. The total amount that Notch has spent towards actual development of Minecraft is $0, or actually he paid C418, that is it. He isn't just taking our money and running, the game is being constantly developed. What is so hard to understand about that?

Quality of output = Skill * Effort
Nope!
High taxes = EVERYTHING free

Contains Pachebel's Canon made with noteblocks, a working Rubik's cube made with pistons, and the ultimate TNT cannon.
