When making a NEW Map the X Y Z values determine the map size.
X = the Horizontal (left to right size)
Y = the Vertical (Sky and Depth size)
Z = the Other Horizontal (up to down size)
Having a larger Y number will make the sky higher and make the map deeper (meaning it takes longer to reach bottom when digging)
X and Z will make the world bigger, making for more areas and caves to build/dig.
As for how to understand the view of the maps..this is something that needs to be learned hands on with some trial and error. You can view your results in Minecraft easily by naming the file with .mine then loading it from minecraft.
There is no way that i've found to make a huge sky height and low ground depth...acutally that's a lie. You CAN do that but the resuilt is having a WALL surround your world..which is neat in some cases.
I change the size of maps I make or use generators to make then change the height enough, and don't get walls all around my maps..
For me, I go Edit>Map Size> For height(like top to bottom) You would want to change Y obviously. o_o Oddly.. Top(left box) adds/takes away from the bottom of the map? and the box on the right to enter stuff in called Bottom adds/takes away from the top. To make the map smaller, use a negative value like -100 and etc. Making it bigger will leave open spaces whene you increase the size since it doesn't generate ner map for those areas I guess.. so it's probably easier to just make a new map and set the dimensions to what you want when you're making it.(if with Omen)
I haven't used it long and it's probably best to just do lots of experimenting yourself to figure out some neat tricks you can do. :biggrin.gif:
Thanks for the answers. But I'm still in need of a tutorial of Omen. Something to show me how to make a map, and a river, and all sorts of things that would take hours, if not days to do manually in Minecraft.
I gotta point out, the guy isn't asking how to make something, he's asking how to work Omen so he can do these things himself.
Actually some sort of beginners guide to Omen would be much appreciated. Its an amazing tool that after 3 weeks of using I probably can only use 1/3 of its capabilities. Sadly, a 15 min tutorial would have gotten me a lot more progress in that 3 weeks. Took me days just to figure out layer up and down were not quite what I thought it meant. And don't get me started with the layer numbering, or the XYZ coordinates.
There is no reason to change Omen to make it more user friendly, but even just a .txt with a bit of explanation on how things work on it a bit more would help out a lot.

The layer up and down are incorrectly labelled to start with; layer up, I remember like this: "pealing a layer off" and layer down, "placing a layer on" but it should be the other way around anyway...
I'll definitely get round to making an Omen beginners tutorial set sometime. I'll have to use MS-Sam as the voice since I lack a Microphone... unless you'd prefer just subtitles and ambient music in the background.

Brush > 3D > Size (your choice recommended 16+) > Air Block > Press 'O' > Zoom out a little > Draw river shape (use Overhead view)
Zoom into where you want the water level to be > Floodfill > 2D > Water > Flood river surface > Zoom in a bit > 3D > Flood river base.
Done.
I might do a video tutorial or something sometime.

Only if its "Under the Rainbow" and features an animated dancing mongoose with a purple hat.
