Introduction
Hello, I am Saer. I haven't been playing minecraft very long, but I have roleplayed for a while now on other sites. I am hoping this will give the community a picture of what is right in a roleplay. Now, I made this based off of Minecraft roleplays. I would have a whole lot more to say if this was a forum roleplay, but generally they are similar.
I don't know where to post this. This is my first post on the forums and stuff, but I think this needs to be posted.
If you have any other questions, or things you think should be added, I am not sure if there is post editing, but if there is I will edit the post to add it in.
Now, we begin
What is a Roleplay?
A roleplay is generally a conflict/communication between characters. Characters are usually one person or being. In some cases they can be whole groups, towns, even empires. This sets the scale of the roleplay.
In Minecraft, usually since each player is just one person, it is a small scale conflict between individuals.
What makes a Roleplay?
For a roleplay to be considered a roleplay, there are many things required. If it doesn't have these attributes, odds are it is not a roleplay at all.
-Out of Character talk: Commonly called OOC, it is talk not between characters, but between players. It is not contributing toward the roleplay its self, but it could be random chatter. It could be used in many ways such as parenthesis, saying ooc:, using brackets, and many other ways to determine it.
-In Character talk: Commonly called IC, this is the talk of the characters, and not of the players. This would be their imaginary character, who has a role in the world.
-Roles: Yeah it is kind of obvious. Each person needs a part to play, if there is no part to play there will be no roleplaying. That is why administrators, moderators, or players, need to set up some sort of place for everyone.
-Setting: The setting is also kind of obvious. Without a setting, there would be no place for characters to communicate or have conflicts. In Minecraft, there is an obvious setting of the world. Now what you do with that world is your choice. (More will be said about settings later on)
What makes a successful Roleplay?
There are many things that are found in a successful roleplay looking back. They all vary, but all of them generally have the same overall qualities.
Every successful (or good) roleplay has a goal. Everyone wants to contribute toward that goal. This goal could be already known, or later to be discovered or created. The goal needs to be something that everyone can help to contribute to as well. If their role prevents it, then they can't join in.
The setting is something that kind of adds into the roleplay. In Minecraft, you can begin building, then later roleplay with the built structures, or build and roleplay.
Now, if you do the first (build then roleplay) you shouldn't build much. Why? Since the players should be building the setting for their character as well. If it is already created, they don't have much room to work with. What little you do build could contribute to an overall plot, such as finding a hidden temple, or maybe discovering an underground shaft that leads to riches, but losing some characters on the way (getting lost).
The other kind of setting building (building and roleplaying) means your characters (not players) create the setting, and from there, they build up a story to go along with it. This means that those who created it could be considered the "founders" and from there, if the founders never come back (die in roleplay, or just don't rejoin the server), they will be looked back on for the overall plot of the past. The future builds on the past, and this could create conflict between past and present characters over the building and replacing.
Another major attribute to a successful roleplay is an antagonist. Now, there doesn't need to be a character antagonist, but there can be many different kinds: Man vs Man, Man vs Self, Man vs Society, Man vs Nature, Man vs Time, and so on.
The most obvious in Minecraft is Man vs Man. Now, instead of it being just a character against another, there could be other things that will create a bigger goal, not just for one but for a whole group. For example, rival towns. One town attempting to become stronger and better than the other. The creators and leaders of each town would be fighting for characters to stay. Each town would be fighting for advantages to keep characters in town. This would mean both towns would be working, and then the extra characters would be participating between the towns.
Extra ideas of Roleplaying
-Economy: This means the system they use uses values for every block. That means to build a wooden home, you would need to chop trees down for wood. To make gold blocks, you would need to mine for gold. To make glass you need to have sand and coal (for fire and heat). This all makes it more real and difficult. It adds more roles for everyone to be.
-Time: Time is money. I don't have any money. So wait, does that mean I don't have time?
Time gives you a perception of how much work you get done in one day. There could be day and night as well. During the day there would be all the work being done. During the evening there would be the talk of the days work, and socializing. During the night would be sleep and maybe personal work being done.
-Professions: A man shouldn't be able to do everything himself. In the real word, you can't. You cant be a master at magic, and building? That doesn't make sense! Picking a profession would make people rely on you for certain things, and in return they would do something for you.
-Experience: You know practice makes perfect, right? Experience is obvious. A man who doesn't know how to build shouldn't be able to build a 3 story building in less than a day. This is kind of relating to professions. As you begin your profession, you shouldn't be perfect at it. You should slowly get better, and do more advanced things. So limit yourself for effect and fun.
-Weather: If it is raining, do you need to water your plants? I don't think so, but what do I know? You shouldn't be outside anyway if it is raining. The heat of the day should also contribute toward how fast you work (if outside), or what you do. Weather unknowingly should effect your character.
Conclusion
Thank you for reading. This should help give you an idea of what a roleplay is, how to make one, and what will make it best.
Have a nice day. Comment positively, or constructively please.

In minecraft, I guess you could "text fight" Never thought about that, but I never thought of killing a character.
Text Fight is something I learned from my experiences on Warcraft III Roleplays.
Instead of doing literal battles using no writing what-so-ever (whoever has the better units or the most units), you type out what goes on.
Ex: "I slash my sword in your direction."
"I block the sword with my hard iron shield. I come back at you with my axe"
"I dodge the axe and attempt a counter-strike with my sword."
and so on.
I think it is possible, but it shouldn't be done with characters, but imaginary antagonists, such as demons, dragons, and so on (NPCs rather).
But what would happen to them when they die? Would they be kicked from the server?
Would they not be able to come back?
Would they come back as a different character?
But what would happen to them when they die? Would they be kicked from the server?

Would they come back as a different character?
That is why death really couldn't work out
You could just say they're knocked unconscious, maybe for 10-20 minutes.

True, but that would actually mean nothing.
Killing off a character adds little, but knocking one out does nothing (basically).
The only thing I could think of is maybe the characters go to heaven or another dimension (idk, just an idea) and from there they try to be reborn.
At the time or writing, no one's on the roleplay servers (Namely Mysterious Island and OldFrontier).
A shame, since I have work in 4 hours, and I would have liked to get a bit of Roleplaying done.
Any private ones around?
also, Newfrontier is also, I think, Empty.

I am going to potentially make a roleplay server while New Atluria is down (the only public roleplay server that actually roleplays). Unless Niburu actually lets me host New Atluria... then that will maybe change my plans.
Edt:lol, I realized, yeah Pl0x's RP server is just a free build, it doesn't have much or any roleplaying in it. I will talk to him, and try to enlighten him.
I take is back Saer, your a snob. You come on our server yesterday and claim that you had "converted" our server, which you didn't do. You don't do anything at all in the server, and later leave. You come back today, and as I'm building my house you tear down the logs as I make them. I tell you to stop and tell you I'm building the house. You then say that I'm building the house wrong, say I don't have enough resources and go on to say that nobody in this game has enough resources to build and that we're all wrong. You say this and have no idea how our server works. You then go on to say that you are an architect, and therefore you know everything about minecraft roleplaying. I call you out on this, and then you say that I am supposed to go from across the map, and bring over MINUSCULE amounts of wood each time to build my house. Why would I do this? It would take an hour to build one floor!
Throughout this whole time, you did absolutely nothing on the server, and never contributed anything. You just came on and acted like you knew everything. I hope no other server ever has to be ruled under your presence.
Chicken Face: Old frontier is no longer a roleplay. The new server, NewFrontier, is private, and can be accessed from our thread post in Server Discussion.

You critize me?
I went onto Old frontier before New was created, and I said, "This doesn't look like roleplay at all, what is up with all the sponges? That can be econ?" Thus one of the reasons why I assumed the worse from you, and others.
Meteo then said, "Some random people built that." Basically
I then asked, "Why don't you restart?"
He said, "We are restarting monday."
I misinterpreted that, and that is why I thought that.
Now, you think I've done nothing, but yet I did do something. I've built a house underground, outside, and away from everyone else. I was hoping for it to be a hideout. I was to be a thief (I stole the pillows from a house, and put them in mine), an antagonist, an insane one actually.
The thing is, I came from New Alturia. New Alturia had limits on what you could carry, but not any direct ones, only approximate ones. That means YES! It would take you an hour to build a building! The thing is, that would help not clutter the level, and not let people build random buildings. You would need to use teamwork to get the buildings built, have someone bring logs, and cut them down while you build. You know, you can do anything if you put your mind to it!
You've taken all of my words literally, and as if I was angry at you or something...
With this thread, I am at least trying to make a roleplay server something greater than what appears. In New Alturia it is just building towns and cities. In NewFrontier, it is just building buildings (easily), and killing monsters.
I treated you as an equal or something.
You make me... not really angry, more like... idk, just not happy with you.
I AM TRYING TO FREAKING HELP
I left the server for good. I am not coming back. I am out of your hair, out of your way. I said that to you when I left.
NewFrontier is not for me. The economy isn't enforced for everything, so really there isn't anything stopping someone from building a city by themselves.
I should be angry at you, I really should, but I just lost some respect for you.
I guess you have fun, and have a nice day.
Yes, but I was half asleep at the time...
And that was a counter since you were yelling as well.
Edit: Currently half asleep
Edit 2: I remember now, I think I was using caps for impact.
such as bold letters.
YOU CANNOT CARRY THAT MUCH
Edit 3: *Next day* I realized there is literally no reason behind what you posted here. There is no reason at all, or nothing productive actually.
I said in my first post: "Have a nice day. Comment positively, or constructively please." You've done neither.
The server you're in you know the system isn't the best, but you believe to yourself it is. The system that I was trying to tell you at least involved teamwork.

Maybe I will add it in.
Odds are I will
Wait for Lua and then script in some dice rollers. For example:
"roll 1d6"
+Player rolls 1d6 and gets 4.
"roll 1d10+2 to launch a kick at Saer's jaw"
+Player rolls 1d10+2 to launch a kick at Saer's jaw and gets 11(9+2).
This way you can solidify rules for attacking and avert any potential arguments over people who simply refuse to die in text fighting.
Relic of a bygone age.
Would they not be able to come back?
