Honestly it seems the only deterrent jails create is the two minutes when the host asks if they're going to grief and the other person lies and says they won't.

Jails are stupid. Everyone knows how to get out of them anyway.
Do you know how to get out of a 1x1x2?
You can get out of it if you change the block below you to a flower block! It's so ea-NOT. I've seen it done before, though.
I never place a jail on my server. It's not going to stop a griefer from breaking things, and if you're that attached to your work, then either backup the levels, or play on single player.

Only idiot make a jail like that. What if the bottom blcok is op block, too. That is how I make my jails....

No, in that case it would serve its intended purpose better. Most jails I have seen on public servers allow you to walk around though. While an admin could theoretically ban everyone who escapes the jail before he gets his power-trip fill, it completely defeats the "oh I can lock up the jail for the night and all my stuff will be there tomorrow" idea many posters here seem to have.

The server that i OP on has a spawn prison and most people that get annoyed with being stuck abuse the **** out of everyone else then leave. I see these people as griefers and it just saves having to repair any griefed buildings. We also let everyone out unless they are rude there is no need for them.
Even a 1x1x2 prison can be broken out of... with a little help from the outside.
However I've seen on some servers a method of having a wide open prison, with traps (1x1x2 admincrete rooms) above them, in an effort to prevent people from telehaxing out while still being able to watch them.

Not if you engineer it properly. Spawn zone should be standard 1x1x2, but just above that prison should be another 2z of space - but this "backup" cell is totally cased in adminium. Anyone placing blocks on the spawn from outside will only be able to deny newcomers a view.
A rogue OP can circumvent this, but they can also circumvent the standard prison, so that point is moot.
Also, the wider rooms with the above traps (which are, incidentally, where I derive the idea from) are good. I don't use them personally, but I know that they work.
Wow. So, if I want to build some good buildings with my friends and other people, I can't make a multiplayer server?
That's just stupid. It's up to the admins to have spawn prisons or not. IMO, they help enormously. They cut down on griefers over 90% of the time
If you all quit instantly after you see a spawn prison, then you are missing out on some of the best servers.
I don't think it's fair that so many OPs sit around doing nothing when people are trapped in the spawn prison.
It's fair when the spawn prison is more of a test. People who scream, spell wrong, curse, and are just plain rude, you ban them.
If somebody spells correctly, is intelligent, doesn't jump around screaming, and builds great structures, let them out.
@ asianRangerz:
Well, yes. If you break out of prison, you'll get arrested and put back in.
If you break out of a spawn prison, you'll get banned.
It's common sense.
Oh, and that server is the best RP server out there.
If you want to make a server with your friends, it sounds like to me you should make a private servers. Spawn prisons definitely slow griefers down, but good griefers will simply wait, knowing some of the best grief material is in a spawn prison. I like what someone said earlier. Put (prison) or (spawn prison) in your name, save people some time. If the server is empty obviously they're not gonna want in anyways.
This will probably be my one and only post on this forum, but I have to express my opinion on this issue.
Now, prisons in general are pretty much unacceptable. About the only thing that IS acceptable with spawn manipulating is placing an unbreakable platform on the spawn to prevent players from making a hole players have to fall into and crawl out of when they spawn.
Now, the other elements of a prison...
Unacceptable:
-Creating a prison on a public "clan" server (if you only want clan members to play, make it private with a link to your clan's forum)
-Creating a prison when no admins are on (if no one's, on, just save the map and take the damn thing down. You can host when other members want to play)
-Creating a prison to keep greifers out while admins are on (seriously, there's a reason you can kick/ban people)
-Creating a prison when admins are on, and none of them let the players out (this is unfair)
and overall,
-Creating a prison just to keep all players out of your server (once again, JUST MAKE IT PRIVATE)
In conclusion, I think that prisons are generally unfair and just plain annoying. They completely take away the spirit of the game, and the freedom to explore servers. It's understandable that you want to keep your creations safe, but as other users have stated, no structure is permanent.
Greifers are just part of the game. They add the fun of danger, much like pockets of water and lava underground. If part of your tunnel gets flooded or ripped apart, seal it off, or fix it if you can. If your entire build gets destroyed, start anew. Use your previous ideas and perfect them. Make them even more amazing in your new tunnels.
TL;DR: Greifing is just part of the game. You'll never be able to stop it. Just live with it and make the danger part of the fun. If you want to preserve your build, build it on a private server. If you only want friends to join, host a priviate multiplayer server and give the link to friends.
I find jails a necessary evil. Its a little stressing, and I dont lose sleep if I have to change servers because OP isnt on(However it stops overnight destruction). If OP is on, Ill politely ask and they let me through. If I become a regular they usually unlock me right away without question.
I would use a jail system if I was OP of a server full of Da-Vanci like creations. I dont exactly like using them, because it is bothersome, but it is what we have right now.
Jails are now inefficient, There are ways to hack out of them so any half brained griefer could get out. I suggest if you want to protect your servers you turn them of whilst you sleep.

their spawn prison was 2x1x1
i could EASILY get out!
i get out.. and then they ban me?
hopefully those OP's know that if you can walk around in a jail.. you can get out.
they must be new or retarded :/
spawn prisons are stupid.. but its another thing to have OP's that are retarded.

Thanks mail2345 for hosting my server!
Only applies to OP-less servers. With ops, you can just monitor everyone and do random op checks in a paranoid fashion.
Anyway, put the trap at max height.
