I was dicking around, playing vanilla survival (no mods, playing the game legit)... And I heard a wolf barking outside. I ran around kicking skeleton ass, and brought the dog 7 freaking bones, none of which pleased him. He then ran behind a hill and despawned.
I admit I gave myself some bones when wolves first appeared, because it was new and I just wanted to see how beneficial it would be to have a pet wolf. Most accepted 1-3 bones, but sometimes it took more than 8 to tame them. I didn't really care for the wolves, and it was just a test anyway, so I had no qualms deleting the world. Never bothered taming them in legit saves.
Poor OP. It took all your bones and promptly disappeared? Cheer up. Someone posted that it took him 33 bones to tame one of his wolves.

...then killed it brutally...
...That will teach wolves not to reject you.
