Hey everyone! I felt it was about time to share this. I've mostly hit a wall until Notch updates Creative, so I figured now would be as good a time as any. I hope you enjoy!
What is Shadowmarch?
Shadowmarch Castle is the central location featured in Tad Williams' book series named Shadowmarch. There are currently three books out with the fourth, and final, book due out in November. They're all really amazing, and a fantastic story, so I highly recommend them.
What is included?
A lot, actually. :smile.gif: This is a 512x512x256 map, started in OMEN. However, the OMEN portion was very small, and I took a completely hands-on approach after this point:
It now looks like this:
I can't stress this enough: ALL castle work and ALL detail terrain work was done in-game, by hand: no cheats or hacks.
What is included is as close a product I could make within the size limits of the map and up through the second book, Shadowplay.
What is not included?
Funderling Town and below isn't done. Ah well. It's a lot to do, and I'd like the lighting Notch is doing to be implemented before I try it. I also haven't updated it to account for Shadowrise, the third book yet. There are also some small areas and details that I either ran out of room to do, or was incapable of doing well in Minecraft.
Thanks guys! I'm a "big-project" person, so it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility that I'll attempt something this size when the game is gold. But not yet....there's still too much that is going to be added to the final game. Maybe when the beta starts......?
And definately not by myself. The amount of materials needed to do something like this is....ludicrous.:biggrin.gif:
Absolutely amazing. Love it! I have tried to explore this amazing fortress before, but the formidable size of the map has stopped me in my endeavors. Last time I tried I spent a steady hour of swimming and climbing about the map until I was satisfied I'd explored the whole region... Until I realized the amount of land underneath what i'd traversed. =/ It's a -bit- too big for my computer, unfortunately, but awesome nonetheless!
Now, what I'm curious about is whether you'll do anything underground. Perhaps you could dig out a massive mining region underneath the city? A "bunker" for the Shadowmarch royalty? Some fancy lava and water ducts and tunnels and stuff (if simply for show)? =)
@My dear friend Owl: I'm aware of that; I read the topic too. :happy.gif: But he also said he can't make a perfect replica, and if it's not perfect, it is no true replica! Therefore it must be individualized. Or could be. Or should be. Or whatever.
Owl, the walls are secure and with torches in place there'd be no way for the mobs to spawn in. Just close the gates and mine under the city for whatever you need. It would be impregnable, inpenetrable!
Cause you don't explain it clearly enough.
Also, I was googling the "Incredible" sound from Super Smash Bros and link it to here, but I can't find anything.
None the less. Incredible!
He was replying to SteGriff who clearly said "on an MP Survival server". If you are above a 3rd grade reading level, you shouldn't have any problem inferring something like that.
Thanks everyone! Let's see if I can cover everything.....

Well, as Owl said, it's based off books. The link to the authors page is at the top of the OP. There ARE plans for the underground, but they're very specific. Funderling Town will be a small dwarf-city, and below that are "The Mysteries." While I can't do it perfectly, I stick to the books as much as possible, and there is FAR more in the books than I could fit here.

Thank's, but I wouldn't say I've surplanted edricer at all. None of this is "to scale" or has the amount of detail his work does.

With all the changes going on with the /indev/infdev/ versions, I'm going to wait until things have settled down a little more.

I just shat myself. Nice job LWK, and glad to see that its finally finished. Or maybe not, if you do that underground part. Whatever, looks amazing.
Yeah, there's a LOT that needs to be done still.

This is EPIC!
How long did it take?
Will you ever release it for people to explore?
After seeing ecriders projects, and this, all my creations seem tiny. Oh well...
I've been working on it since about.... September? I'm not sure. Fall of last year sometime.
It is available online for people to explore. The link is up there in the OP after the first couple of pics.
And tiny projects aren't any worse just because they're tiny, but I'll agree this is pretty big.

Cheese, have hope! Anyone can achieve greatness with a really, really great computer.
This does require a good PC to run, especially without fog.

I want to have this on an MP Survival server.
Amazing work, LWK.
Maybe not this exactly, since it's so sepcific that I'd be afraid of making it too public, but definately something of this scale as part of a group effort, certainly.

Edit: what happened to the save file
It's working fine for me. Is the link not working for anyone else?
Quote from SteGriff »
No way. Once you've got all the houses lit with torches, it would be an amazingly functionaly fortress against the mobs, and provide a really nice commune atmosphere.
Stickied temporarily.
That's a LOT of torches. And especially hard, seeing as how in order to keep the file size low, I had to remove all resources like Coal.
And thanks for the sticky! I suppose I have the authority to sticky my own topics, but that'd be lame and presumptuous.
Thanks again for all the kind comments, everyone! There are a few secrets to keep your eyes open for....
- Sasho's Prison Escape
- Chaven's Funderling Town Secret Passage
- The Rooftopper's Sealed Summer Hideaway
- Skimmer's Grotto
- and more that I have forgotten about? :?
