This full scale model of the ocean liner/cruise ship Queen Mary 2 is my pet project that I've been working on in single player for about two months. I began the ship on Yogocraft.com, a creative server, but took it offline so I could use single player commands to speed up the build.
My goal was to build as accurate a model of the QM2 inside and out as possible - every single publicly accessible room and cabin is included, and a person will be able to explore the ship more or less as it exists in real life. Even the inside of the lifeboats have been carefully constructed.
Rather than trying to build a "scale" model of the ship, I started from a basic prototype of a single cabin and worked my way outwards, starting from the center of the ship and working my way outwards to the hull using the blueprints posted on Cunard's website as a guide. This resulted in a ship that makes sense aesthetically, functionally, and in terms of it's grand scale. I realized that the blockiness of Minecraft results in everything looking smaller than it really is - I've seen models of the ship that others have built that are 345 blocks long, to match the ship's 345 meter length. This doesn't really work, because it just results in everything being too squashed and cramped inside. Also, since you need to have floors that are 2 meters (blocks) thick to have separate floors/ceilings, the height/width ratio will be too large and the final ship will be poorly proportioned. By working my way outwards from the center without regard to actual scale, I built an overscaled ship that more accurately resembles the real thing. The ship is 602 x 68 blocks, which I believe is the largest floating ship ever built in minecraft (I welcome anybody who can prove otherwise).
Check out some screenshots, all are rendered with the excellent SEUS shader mod with Optifine in MC 1.5.1.
Thanks folks! I am using single player commands (world edit) to finish it of course, otherwise it would take a lifetime to finish. When it is done I may upload it to planetminecraft or give it to a good youtube reviewer to make a video about it. Either way, I'll make sure it gets on a server so people can check it out.
Finished the Royal Court Theater on Decks 2/3. This was a real b**ch to complete, thank jeebus for the flip command - I only had to build half of the room, then copied and pasted. It still took over 3 hours though - I'm a perfectionist and work very slowly to get the details right XD.
Nice! The QM2 is one of my favorites! How are the suites coming along?
Here are some pics of the penthouse suites on the back of the ship It's ridiculous how massive the ship's hull is - I was able to almost exactly match the layout and design of the suites.
VERY nice. From the first pic I knew the ship. And perhaps the best advice I've ever heard for building. "Start in the center and work to the hull/wall/ceiling". This simple concept has never occurred to me. Will be using it from now on. And the end result on the exterior, at least from the pics is perfect. I also saw you other post, and that statue is magnificent.
Cross-section of the interior so far. I thought this was pretty cool. Made in MCedit. The gray areas in the middle are basically "service areas" in the center of the ship that I didn't finish because I don't care and don't know what they look like - they just show up because the slice runs directly through the center of the ship. The guest rooms are actually behind the gray parts.
This is absolutely AMAZING! I downloaded it earlier today and played with it for quite a while. May I ask what texture pack you're using? It's REALLY nice. Do you have a link?

Same, I'm gonna work on filling the hull with TNT over the next few days.
