I am creating a vanilla server for the 1.3 snapshot, and would like to know what people generally like to see in a spawn. Do you prefer convenient spawns that have usable blocks like crafting tables and enchantment tables, or should players have to earn those themselves? Are castle spawns overused and cliché or tried and true? And most importantly, since I hope to make the server strictly vanilla, will a 33x33 spawn be sufficient for a small server (5-10 player max)?
I have a few ideas of my own, but I thought I'd find out what an average player likes before starting. Thanks!

Okay, thanks for the feedback. I'll make sure not to wall in the whole thing.

On my servers I generally have open spawns. Because cramped spawns with dozens of signs really puts off a user. A spawn is your first impression to the user, make it count
Completely agree. My first impression is all about where I originally spawn
On a server I am working onm\, the spawn is on and island an appears as a little capital building with an admin room and two rooms, one with the rules, staff board, and mascot, and another with a (public) nether portal and a public crafting/funrance area. Outside, there is a road that leads across a river into a public spawn city and to giant statues of the staff's skins. There is a little staff outbuilding with levers to contorl redstone and staff rules. The road lads into a nearby forest, for players to collect wood.

Yes. Yes I do.
GOLD BLOCKS! LOTS AND LOTS OF GOLD BLOCKS!! I like to put gold blocks with glowstone on the floors and than wood planks on the walls. Also a chandelier would look very nice. ;D
A very wide open area. Also, it should match the theme of the server. If it's middle-aged, make a castle, not a skyscraper. If it's more technologicaly advanced, use like the portal room, idk.
Diamond emerald, gold and iron blocks! Make sure it's a huge box that looks like it was built in creative!
No, in all honesty, as mentioned before, try to make it have a theme. Usually, when I join a server with a smaller spawn that's a village or something, I feel the spawn had hard work put into it. But when there's just a huge box out of diamonds and emeralds, you can tell it was just made with w/e
I think buliding your spawn in a plains or forest biome is the best, because the colour of the grass. And make sure it looks very beautiful , colorful and all that stuff. On my server the spawn is a big ball with a rainbow ceeling, and it looks very pretty and good looking. There is a 'room of mystery' in which you read the rules and book-write the stuff you like and don't like in the server.I preffer to make up to 4 doors ,like make 1 part of the walls green one red one yellow and one blue. The blue door should lead to a survival world, the green for HG,the yellow for creative etc.... I am currently buliding a big waterpark, a disneyland and the Madrid football Stadium-close to spawn. And I think gold and diamond blocks (in big ammounts) don't look so pretty at all.
Island spawn or cave-themed spawns are nice, and with cave-themed spawns the work of making the cave is already done for you. Whatever you do, don't make a boring, huge castle, or worse, a schematic-ed city.

I have discovered a truly remarkable proof of this, which this margin is too small to contain.

Well, if you have any redstone knowledge you can have a little spawn where you have pistons, command blocks, and pressure plates. You can do /give commands(like full stone tools and some leather armor as a start), then do something that sets a new spawn point where will be the actual spawn hub. I think you should have workbenches there, and some trees around spawn.
I rather like open spawns that create more of an environment than a epic structure. Make it run aroundable and not just some massively big vastly thing. 'specially for a small server as you described.
I like having a nice town with some cool looking buildings that can provide new users with basic materials for building and survival. Most of the spawn town buildings would be fully or semi automated farms and generators
I think unclimb-able mountains (Such as The Hive) make a nice effect, they let it feel open, but the mountains are more natural-feeling barriers than invisible blocks.
Floating islands (Such as Mineplex) are also good, there is no need for barriers, and it feels VERY open and fun.
EDIT: OMG I SWEAR IF I ACCIDENTALLY NECRO ONE MORE TIME...
