This thread is great! I've been wanting to build a city for a while (not legit but haters gonna hate) but had lack of ideas on how to set it up etc, this is great! I'm building on a flatmap but plan to landscape all inside the city and everything :biggrin.gif:

good job on this maybe ad some more ideas like pistons or how to build certain things to get people started.

Where other men blindly follow the truth, Remember, nothing is true
Where other men are limited by morality or law, Remember, everything is permitted. We work in the dark to serve the light. We are assassins.
I know this is a dang old topic, however it gave me ALOT of ideas on what to build.
If the topic creator still visits the forums, thanks for this thread :wink.gif:.
I'm here, and even better, I'm still working on a huge update for this thread. The bad news is that progress is slow and time is sparse. Though, because everything is going to be reworked, I might update in chunks (update the first third of the post, then the second, then third) to keep this topic relevant and up-to-date. So far, the final update introduces a pistons section and a couple sections focusing on design.
Also, glad to hear people are still referencing this and getting things from it.
Awesome news, i'm particularly looking forward to the design sections. Lately i have been running out of designs to use. So the upcoming design section would aid me greatly.
As always, keep up the good work , i know it takes time putting these things together, but it is just a great resource to fall back on when you get "builders block" as you said in the main post.
One of the things that I do, when building, is look at real world examples of very unique architecture and structure of the city as a whole. One of my goals is to create a city very similar to that of a Mexican island city Janitzio. There is something very appealing to buildings stacked on buildings, with rising, tiered stairs up to a monument.
So really, do your research, have a clear cut idea on what you want to make. Will the city be set up more realistically with the buildings. Will it follow a universal theme in visuals, or will it be some strange amalgamation of anything and everything. There are a lot of ways to plan a city and even more types of themes and ideas. What is most important is having a plan and having that core concept of scale discussed earlier.
Don't be discouraged, it takes a lot of time to build anything in minecraft, so don't be upset if it doesn't look right initially. Keep trying. I tend to make a rough shape of buildings and rooms and then start to define them and add more detail (start with the boxes and expand).
Wow, this is precisely the sort of thing I've been looking for. I'm glad I finally stumbled upon this thread, though I wish it had been sooner! So eminently useful and inspirational, and not just the Mega-comprehensive building list. Thanks for speaking to Builder's-Block, as I've been struggling with that for the last couple months, having gotten tired of half-finished castles. Can't wait to see the updates. Bookmarked for being worth more than :GoldBar:.
