I am going to start my first large scale project, and i need some tips. I am going to build a city heavily referenced from Kowloon walled city, but i have no experience on building cities, any tips and tricks on how to build it and reference images would help a lot
I've always been fascinated by that place, as far as building it in minecraft, I think you're gonna want to make sure you have enough colour and texture variation so it doesn't end up just looking like a big flat box.
Further to that, make sure you add all the little details, just look at all the little things in this picture. There's a few good reference images on the wikipedia page.
There's those caged balconies all over the place, many different styles of windows, air conditioners, clothes lines, signs, different buildings jut out more, and so many more. I think all those details will be really important to making it look good in minecraft.
As far as I can tell, there would have been alleyways crisscrossing all over the place, and not just on the bottom, all through the buildings too, apparently you could go from one side of the city to the other without ever touching the ground.
There don't seem to be many pictures from inside, but I found this one video that might help you get the vibe (which seems to be generally dystopian)
