Just as a disclaimer, I'm god awful with redstone so I set out today to teach myself how to use it, and after a couple hours I taught myself how to build a very simple elevator with just 2 sticky pistons. Idk if this design is widely known already or if anyone else has come up with it before, it most likely has cause its super simple, but anyways, here is the elevator.
Contained in the link is a GIF image of myself demonstrating the elevator, and 2 pictures of the background wiring that runs the elevator. I am going to be trying to compress the wiring as much as I can in the future, but this design does not take much redstone at all and is very good for a survival house imo.
A basic description of what is happening is it's what I guess would be called a "Piston Extender" or something along those lines. The sticky piston holding the wool block you stand on is attached to another sticky piston underneith that one. The bottom piston pushes the 2nd piston up, and the 2nd piston pushes the wool block up, giving the player access to the 2nd floor. Once finished with the upward process, the bottom piston drags the 2nd piston back down to the default stage, and the 2nd piston extends a final time and drags the wool block back down, resetting the whole elevator for another use.

Come check out my youtube channel, I try to make it a pretty chill place!
its called a double piston extender. if you look it up you'll probably find the most compact version of it. usually for elevators people use slime blocks though. but in 1.13 even that is obsolete, people just us water elevators that employ a block swapper that swaps out a magma block for soulsand.
this is still impressive for a first time redstoner though. + everyone has to start somewhere.
