The other day I had an idea for a map centered around a particular mechanic, the only problem being I'm not sure if the mechanic would be any fun, worse yet I feel like it might turn some people off the map entirely.
The mechanic is as follows: the player progresses through the map by collecting artifacts from a number of dungeons, pretty standard I would think. The catch being instead of these artifacts adding to the player's abilities and increasing their strength, they take away abilities and generally hinder the player's advancement.
The reasoning behind such a mechanic is to increase the difficulty of a non-linear adventure, all the dungeons have roughly the same difficulty and may be completed in any order. Taking away abilities would serve to increase the difficulty without forcing players through a linear path.
My main concern is that as people play they will become discouraged because they are penalized for the progress they are making.
Basically I want to gauge the general feeling of the community, do you think you would be discouraged by a mechanic like this? If so how do you think I can improve it?
