I have no idea what to make in creative any more. I have tried building and making it up as I go, drawing rough outlines of what I want, and following exact floorplans.
I definitely like making it up as I go the most, because then I generate more and more ideas as I continue to build. With this style though, it is very difficult to get an idea to build off of. I usually start something and give up very soon when I don't think of ideas, or get overwhelmed by the amount of ideas I have and give up.
Does anyone have any tips or ideas so I can stay dedicated to a build? I like to build modern, mostly.

Definitely pull up photos as references from the internet. I'm currently working on a village in the Greek Mythology pack, and am trying to stick true to the building style of Ancient Greece, so I have been pulling photos like crazy. It's coming along, but I've had to rip out certain buildings from the NPC villages that I just couldn't seem to modify and give it the correct feeling.
Are you building with vanilla blocks? Since minecraft's most common blocks are geared to a medieval style, lately I've found myself using modded blocks, especially since my favorite theme is best described as "Space Atlantians".
Also, I've been a lot more focused on building since using the Ruins mod to "save" my builds, because they get "reincarnated" in so many ways in worldgen, even if a world gets corrupted, the structure is easily salvageable. World edit also saves files, but the surprise of them appearing in the world by themselves is such a delight!
