Ooh, perhaps (if you're willing to have one) it could be an area housing a nether portal? I'm imagining that wherever the lava ends up, there could be a small-ish cavern with s tiny island of sorts, with a nether portal. Or if you're against having a portal, you could just have some netherack and maybe soulsand in there.
Another thing, is it's possible to make it a smooth stone generator as well (just make the lava meet a water source block), so you could have it like a little viewing area with red glass around one lava source block, and it goes down to a water source block(infinite source). From there it might go out of sight, with pistons pulling the stone away, and that could go to build a wall out of nothing maybe? Or something like that. And if you like the compact design, it could be like the "heart of the mountain"? Unless you have something better planned for that.

Even though my Join date is in 2014, I tried the demo on 8/30/2012, and bought the game two days later on 9/1/2012. So hipster
But here's the really exciting thing, something I really love the look of. Behold!
SCENERY!
That's right! Now, instead of a bizarre cliff falling into an endless ocean, we have trees! Mountains! Lakes! Rivers! Cliffs! All made by CTrY, who is absolutely fantastic at Worldpainter.

Dang! That looks AMAZING! Nice job CTrY, nice job! It really adds to the atmosphere, now it's more like a real world, a real city, y'know?
Side note, do you intend on expanding the world past Fjalloheim? I think I remember you saying something like that a while ago, but can't remember

Please delete the images in your quotes, they lag the thread. Besides that, I am going to expand past Fjalloheim, but this thread will be entirely dedicated to the city itself. I do have plans for other giant cities, though; after Fjalloheim is done, I'm going to be building one called Riverfall, which uses an oriental style.
I didn't get much work done today, I just made a stairway going from the Commerce District up to the mansion at the top of the Quarter's District. But I did figure out something pretty cool - shaders!

Sorry about the lack of updates recently, I had a bit of a scare when I thought everything on my computer got deleted. (In reality, it was me being an idiot and forgetting my password xD) But here's a bit of stuff to tide you over.
This staircase leads straight up to the bridge and the top of the Quarters District.
I expanded the Underway a bit. The door at the top leads into the Chasm District; I figured it was getting in the way so much, I mighteswell incorporate it somehow.
Sorry for being inactive for so long (again), this part of the build is killing my inspiration (again.) I'm on track now though (again) and will start building regularly (hopefully I'm not lying.) again. So yeah. Enjoy this defensive tower thing.
Looking good! Glad to know I'm not the only one who has issues with inspiration and ideas.

Hehe, happens to the best of us. Anyways, the Commerce District is nearly done, so I'm gonna put the polls up. To make things easier, I've narrowed it down to two options. May the most interesting sounding idea win
At last, the Commerce District is done. I'll definitely have to come back to it; but I'd like to start on something fresh before this project dies again.
Sorry for the wait, guys! No, I'm not dead and neither is this project; I've just been busy with other stuff. Mainly, getting the basic builds done for Dungeonrunner - The Fallen Land before 1.9 before I can start doing all the redstone for it. I've been working on Fjalloheim on and off, but haven't done anything to warrant an update. I should be back to updating regularly in a few weeks.
Well, I'm back! I got a good chunk of work done on The Fallen Land, and I'm ready to get back to work on Fjalloheim. I detailed the heck out of the underground city, and added all sorts of nice clutter to make things look less empty. I really like the ceilings, they give the whole build a way nicer look.

Click here to get Rick-Rolled. No seriously
Those are clotheslines, in the Chasm District.

Ahhhhh, I see, I guess they are invisible armor stands then?
Yup.

Okay, so, two updates today! Here's the first one, for the Commerce District -
I made another raised part because it felt too boring, and this little stand for keeping rain and stuff off the goods.
