It is designed in such a way that smelting your iron or mining diamond ore without a silk touch pickaxe will be less useful then keeping the ore variant. This is because 24 iron ore can be traded in for protection 3 iron armor and 24 diamond ore can be traded in for protection 3 diamond armor. All armor and weapons will be bought with iron or diamond ore.
