I've been playing Minecraft ever since it came out on the XBOX 360 version, I still play it to this day.
No need to worry, I'll be making the leap sometime in the future; I enjoy what I have for now.
Keep in mind the version I'm playing with though, I don't have access to many of the NEW flashy things enjoyed by most of you.
That said, let's begin.
Like many have said time and time again before, Minecraft has become far too easy. I realized that a while ago, and since I don't or can't mod on the 360, my options in terms of hardening Minecraft are quite slim. It has become evident that my only options rest in my imagination, which may or may not be finite.
Thus far I've compiled this short and simple list of guidelines for myself to follow, I hope to add more to the list using your suggestions. If nothing is added then this thread may very well help someone else, still having served its purpose. Nothing here is concrete. At the end will be a section dedicated to reviewing the guidelines for any faults or irrationality that I might notice in them.
Sleeping disallowed.
Player cannot craft any weapons/tools higher than wood.
Player cannot craft armor above the leather tier OR player cannot craft armor period.
Player can only obtain higher tier tools/weapons by trading or finding them.
Player can only obtain higher tier armor (or armor at all) by trading or finding it.
Some things I've noticed after trial and error.
Stone tools-.. I can't think of any feasible realistic way to obtain them that isn't too much of a stretch. However, when stone tools are so easy to obtain it sucks a lot of the challenge out of the game. Stone equipment is much too balanced and is therefor a "crutch" if you catch what I mean. They ended up being a beginning set of tools in the bonus chest(yes, I use it) that I never ended up using again in my trial runs. Made it a unique novelty set though.
So far I've stuck to not being able to craft armor in my runs. After a handful of runs I never managed to buy armor from a villager, not once. Items were far too expensive is what I found, but I never tried many things to become emerald rich that I should have in hindsight. Most of my money-flow was directed towards securing the tools I needed to advance. I was hunting animals, slaying hostile mobs, and mining to produce what little income I could. Just doing those things is FAR too slow to produce emerald, at least the way I was going about it. My next move will be to build a farm near the home village so that I may more easily make emerald. Mob farms would surely do your emerald bag justice.
A slight inconvenience I noticed is how dependent you become on your villagers. The death of my village blacksmith caused me to scratch a run. I still remember the sight of the zombified blacksmith walking to my house from the stables. Ugh..
Anyhows, I hope we can improve on this idea of simply making Minecraft harder YOURSELF, though I can't help but wonder if having hardcore difficulty would have added that edge I was looking for.. Thanks, I'm eager to see your replies.
Hasta la vista, baby. So long, keep it real, peace out.
