I have been trying to make an elevator to get spare villagers from my sea level iron farm to the one above it at Y 90. I normally just build a mine cart track but this time I thought I would have a go at making an elevator. I saw a YouTube video which used only one bucket of water and vines up the elevator shaft. It didn't work so I reverted to the more known version with water/ladder/water/ladder etc. But again it isn't working. The villager sits at the bottom and drowns. Whilst I haven't probably explained it very well, has anyone got any suggestions?
Use a ladder and push them up. Create a chute/hallway with the ladder at the end. Make sure your ladder is enclosed on both sides or the villager will slide off to one side. Once you have two villagers on the top level you can just breed them for the balance.
The elevator will be more reliable if you replace the ladders with open fence gates or signs. The problem is likely that they want to go back to the village they 'belong' to and that it why they are fighting it. Ladders have a hitbox that they can get stuck on whereas fence gates (once opened) and signs do not.
The trick with the vines (or ladders work also and easier to get at hand) but to get this to work you need a villager at the foothill of the ladder then you get a second villager to bump into him and they will both climb it together, they do not climb on there own, if you can get a nice steady stream of them coming in you can get multiple up at once. Or as Vonderbach said a nudge from yourself might do. Or as x1tom said they might be getting caught up in the hitbox, if that is not the case maybe you have a downward flowing current, maybe that's catching them as dar as i know they need source blocks to swim up, I would always use signs or fence gates as stated above
