I'm making this maze on Xbox right now, trying to decide, besides the lovely butterfly, what I should add. I have lots of room left so I want to add either a couple smaller things or maybe one large item around the front.
Any suggestions?

Maybe a sort of observation tower? That goes slightly over the hedge but not so far that you can just map it all out. If not that then a gazebo is always a great touch.

Use carpet or wool instead of grass. So, if you do add traps, it won't be as obvious.
Add a fence of some sort, with a chest or dispenser system that offers a bow and arrow, and in order to move on, they have to shoot it at a pressure plate, where it triggers a sticky piston to move a wall. Then, on the other side of the wall, put a pressure plate on the ground, as it would immediately reset the wall.
At the end of the maze, set up some trip wires where it sends a signal to some hidden dispensers in the ground filled with fireworks.
As for directional/positioning, this will be difficult, as if you work with redstone, you'll have to find a creative way to hide it.
You should check out the server on my youtube channel. It's a collection of mazes, parkour areas and PVP arenas all interconnected and filled with treasure, death traps, monster spawners and levels that extend into the clouds, under water, into caves, the nether and even into the nether portal.
It's been a group effort of dozens of builders with a single mindset of making the experience challenging but fair. Some of the designs are just amazing and I'm blown away everytime a new builder adds something to this growing complex.
You can add me on Xbox Live as DreamerMMA. I have the same name for my youtube channel if you want to check out the overview videos. Those might offer some inspiration.

I like that idea a lot Snow_Yoshi98! I may have to put a little tower in their
I added a gazebo/observation deck in the corner, so you can see the maze a little bit and elsewhere
Make like the Tri-Wizard Tournament and fill your maze with monster traps or puzzles
That is so awesome!! I may have to make another one just to do that >.<

Water tunnels to proceed to next section.
Lava pool dead ends.
Hints written in books or riddles then placed in an item frames at the end of of a dead end.
Green carpet over lights on floor/ground to light areas or whole area.
Different leaf types for different sections.
Note block sounding a checkpoint hooked up to a pressure plate or trip wire.
Some of the paths could be water and you walk across lilly pads.

Good Luck,
and please don't forget to post more pics as the maze progresses, loving it so far
