I had a beautiful two-story wood and stone home I finally finished building. I had spent so much time getting the roof right, and everything else. Then, with a flint and steel in my hand, I tried to close a door. My first thought was, "I set myself on fire!" Then I realized it wasn't just me. Soon most of the wood, at least 80% of my house, was gone! About 5 minutes after the fire was out, it started to rain. I could cry.
Ugh. I feel for you. Probably happened to many in some way shape or form. One time I lit something on fire by mistake and the wood around began to burn. I thought I had it out with minimal damage. Apparently I missed one spot. Later went around the back of the building only to find most of it missing.
But but in all seriousness, I think we've all been there. Hopefully you didn't lose chests of valuables. That would suck even more. I'm sure you'll recover, and your canine companion too.
It was a fairly new house. I had just finished it, for now, and was building a nether portal in the basement. That's why I had the lighter in hand. Luckily, most of my valuables were elsewhere. The dog is ok. I had to go hunting for cows and pigs, though. The most ironic part, even more than having it rain after the fire was out, is that I was playing in peaceful mode.
Yeah, the rain is just an insult to injury. The only thing that could be worse is if lightning stuck your house, and then stopped raining. Cause you might be completely unaware.
I've abandoned that world, at least for now, and started a new one. I may build a house out of obsidian. It will be ugly, but should survive about anything!

I also learned this the hard way, never open a door with a bucket of lava in hand.
The worst part was hearing my dog yelping as he sat where I told him and burned. He lived, but he'll need some skin grafts to make it.
(in all honesty, i've had this happen in the worst of ways, and I was quite upset)

I've built an obsidian generator.
Purple glass looks good with obsidian!
So does quartz!
It's hard to see out through quartz.
