Has anyone been able to figure out the mapping system yet on large worlds? I've made multiple maps, tried to map a new area of the world, and putting them together on a wall using item frames and nothing has worked. Anyone else having issues? I'm playing on Survival.
Once you load up a world the first map you get, fly off into the distance to the point where you don't appear on that map anymore(your blip turns into a circle), then go into your inventory and pull out another map. You'll start loading up that area.
It is hard to line the maps up perfectly. Where you first craft the map is where the center point of the map will be.
So you'll have to go to the edge of your map, and then walk about half a map'a distance in a direction and craft the next map there. I haven't done much with maps yet, but that is how it should work.
Figured it out. You don't have to be near the center, you just have to craft the map after you Cross the map border. It seems to register the area it's made in instead of the one it's activated in.
It will take 25 maps to display the whole world (each map covers a bit more area than you're used to).
Note that a 'world display' is a nice decoration on the wall, but since you can't take it with you, it's only a decoration.
I have started a map room. This should be interesting to fill out this entire world on maps. Even making a map storage area of chests of each map. Kind of ridiculous but enduring. So a wall of item frames for the maps and chest area, never thought of a whole Cartography room. All the maps are kind of annoying but building the room should be fun.
Just so everyone knows, the Xbox One versions doesn't support the feature the PC has where if you put a large number of maps on the wall they form into one large mega map. Just in case people were trying.

You don't actually have to make the map in the new area, you just have to first use it there. I noticed when they changed maps so that initially it's blank, and left-trigger uses it, and thought there must be a reason. You can make the blank maps anywhere, so long as you first use it in the desired area.
