If you sign into xbox live you should be prompted to download the latest title update, tu63, and you are at a rough equivalent to 1.12.2 java. Most of the mechanics are the same, and we have all the items that java has.
Console edition is different in that;
We have (very) limited map sizes, and therefore finding one map that has everything you want is nearly impossible. The end dimension is tiny, and you cannot fly from the main island to the one end island we get on old gen. Check out the Seeds forum in the Minecraft: Editions section if you are looking for something specific.
We have passive mob caps (only so many villagers, animals etc. allowed per world).
Dungeon spawners do not ignore mob cap like in java.
There are many other technical differences in the way the two games work, but unless your an advanced redstoner your unlikely to notice.
We also have some features/mechanics that are currently only in bedrock edition. For example we can push chests, under certain conditions, with pistons now, noteblocks as well can be pushed with pistons. The wither acts like the bedrock version, has the same animations and spawns in wither skellys during the fight.
