I've got a question. In one of my worlds, I kept a sheep that I dyed blue in a pen. But, the sheep randomly went missing and I have to spawn another one and dye that one blue as well. It went missing too. I think it's because I'm moving too far away from it and it despawns. Can someone confirm my theory?
A common glitch in Minecraft is that when the area loads, any mobs that are next to solid blocks can load partially in the block and suffocate to death. Mobs can sometimes escape pens when they are placed into the fence.
Also, animals won't despawn if you move away.

Say something silly, Laugh 'til it hurts, Take a risk, Sing out loud, Rock the boat, Shake things up, Flirt with disaster, Buy something frivolous, Color outside the lines, Cause a scene, Order dessert, Make waves, Get carried away, Have a great day!
With the sole exceptions of untamed ocelots, bats, squid, and chickens spawned as part of a chicken jockey passive mobs do not despawn; most likely, it either glitched through the fence, suffocated in a wall (directly related to the former), or a wild wolf killed it.
That is, unless you are on Bedrock or Console, which have different despawning rules but since this is the Java subforum I'm assuming you are on that version (in Bedrock most mobs despawn unless certain conditions are met, one of which is player interaction, even just by touching it, so a dyed sheep should not despawn):
I have a row of animal pens side-by-side, each one is 18x18m (or 20x20m including the fencelines), and they're made out of wooden fences stacked two-high. I have a pen for sheep, one for cows, one for chickens, etc. The sheep seem to regularly teleport themselves between the pens adjoining theirs. I think it only happens on reloading the world, as I have never noticed it during a single play session, only once I reload from the savegame.

Hi, I'm Augur and I'm from New Zealand (NZ). Just call me "Augur". I'm an older person playing Minecraft Xbox 360 Legacy Console Edition without Xbox Gold (no online gaming, sorry), so please don't hate on the old. 😄

Curse Premiumyou may also want to get a nametag and name it something. that will prevent despawns.
even if conor is right, that means you'll get a death message in chat "<namehere> suffocated in a wall", too.
Oh okay. Thanks for helping me!

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
I play on X-box 360 and I don't get nametags unfortunately. But Thanks! I'm remember to use nametags when when I play on the computer or mobile.
So yea it must have suffocated in a wall because I had the sheep against a wall and fenced in. Thanks for your help!
if you go fishing you can pull up nametags as part of the sea junk, I have like 30 of them
