In my survival world, I'm trying to obtain some Mending I enchanted books. So far I have failed miserably at fishing one up, even with my Unbreaking III, Lure III, and Luck of the Sea III fishing rod. Finding them in loot chests has similarly proven elusive. The only other avenue open to me that I know of is buying them from librarian villagers. I currently have about 30 villagers in one area, where I'm using the height method to infinitely breed them. There are only 8 doors in my villager farm, but I have successfully bred 30 villagers from the initial stock of 16 taken from two villages. Of those I have about 8 librarians.
Well, "infinite" is the wrong word here, as there seems to be some maximum limit regardless of the number of houses I have, similar to the maximum number of captive chickens or other neutral mobs I can farm. I still don't have a librarian villager selling the Mending I enchanted book, so I'd like to have a cull of the villagers in my farm, and start breeding again in the hopes of gaining the enchanted book I'm looking for.
My question is though, what happens when I kill my villagers? I read somewhere that it lowers my reputation with the nearby villagers, but I don't recall if that is only a temporary thing, or if leaving the area for a while, as with pacifying an irate iron golem, will reset their happiness, and if so, how long do I need to leave for? Will throwing them food help? Should I just remove my breeding stock from the main farm first, so that they don't witness the impending massacre? If so, how far away do they need to be?

Hi, I'm Augur and I'm from New Zealand (NZ). Just call me "Augur". I'm an older person playing Minecraft Xbox 360 Legacy Console Edition without Xbox Gold (no online gaming, sorry), so please don't hate on the old. 😄
Its not a time based thing. Every time the player strikes a villager the count lowers by one, and every time a player trades with a villager it increases by one. So, manually killing villagers really doesn't effect their happiness that much. As long as you are consistently trading with them any negative points you incur are canceled out quite quickly.
Thanks for the replies. I tried setting up a lava pit with trapdoors, but trying to get the villagers to go anywhere near it was next to impossible. I've trekked some of these villagers many miles between villages to herd them into my trading/breeding area, but they won't go a few short steps for me to the "death chamber". Seems they want to congregate near the village centre, where the doors are. Not keen on setting up the lava chamber too close to the village centre.
The second replly really helped, thanks. I'm now not so reluctant to wave my sword around and end villager lives. I'm trading regularly with the remainder, and everything seems okay. I have succeeded, by the way, and I now have a librarian who sells Mending I enchanted books. Furthermore, I decided to end the Iron Golem menace once and for all, so that made culling the villagers that much easier. Again, thanks for the advice.
