I had a magma cube chasing me in the Nether. I positioned myself on the other side of the portal from it to see if it would try to follow me and it jumped right into the portal and disappeared. I went through portal and when I returned to home world, there it was! I let it chase me for a while and then I ran away and watched it from afar. After a short while it despawned.
I thought Zombie Pigmen were the only mobs that could leave the Nether...

Nope. Nether mobs have been able to go through portals for ages now.
