I hope this thread is taken seriously. I believe this is a feature that is needed on console and everyone would love it!
It seems like no matter what texture pack I use I always end up just reverting back to the standard one. Me and my friends always go back-and-forth debating on which texture pack to use in our world, never settling. The standard texture pack is very pixelated and therefore texture packs like city or natural can seem very appealing at first.
(The following is just my opinion, and some of the opinions from players that I play with, but the point is there's no perfect texture pack. No matter which one you use you can find something that will just make it a headache for you or turn you off to the entire texture pack).
For example:
(I'm not going to go through every texture pack in the game just a few examples. Its just an opinion!)
The city texture pack: The city texture pack is quite similar to the original so everything looks normal just much improved (graphically). But things like weapons and tools become silly objects, and armor makes you look like a fireman, police officer or surgeon.( not quite the look we go for with the type of role-playing we do in our community world).
The natural texture pack: The natural texture pack is also quite similar to the original except everything looks just a little more detailed with more of a medieval feel and it's great! But the smooth stone becomes the biggest eyesore ever as there's nothing smooth about. It looks a lot like Cobble and can make a lot of your builds become very ugly structures. Otherwise I think it would be perfect
The steam punk texture pack: The steam punk texture pack has a lot of interesting blocks that would be nice to build out off and I'll go as far as to say I could deal with the mechanical trees if it wasn't for the fact that the glass blocks give you a round window that's mostly obscured. So when doing a large project that uses a lot of glass you don't get the look you want. For me that's a dealbreaker.
The fantasy texture pack: The fantasy texture pack in my opinion has the coolest armor and tools in the game. It's a bit cartoony but it's not bad. However the look of the glass blocks and chests are a huge turnoff and the dirt blocks are so dark along with every single wood option that it makes your entire world seem very gloomy and limits you on versatility when it comes to building out of wood. Also the plants/crops looks so cartoonlike they might just be the ugliest things in the game.(Dealbreaker)
I could do a small paragraph about every texture pack available on the Xbox one but I feel like you get the point.
Players on the PC already use their own custom texture packs. Even texture packs they've created themselves or make from multiple texture packs that they like where they've chosen the best of both worlds. There certainly are some amazing texture packs on the PC.
I feel like the console players would love a feature to use a custom texture pack were they choose the blocks, tools, weapons, mobs, etc. From the texture packs they already own. I think this would push people to purchase more texture packs just to get specific features/blocks from them meaning more money for the development team/ Publisher, and I'm no expert but I can't picture this being very difficult for the development team to do.
Let me know what your thoughts are about this desired feature. Is it possible? Are the developers even considering this? Are they even aware of this possibility?
Feedback would be greatly appreciated. I hope this thread gets a lot of attention because if so, maybe the developers will consider adding custom texture packs.
I know that this is a redundant idea, but it seems better put together than the ones that I can remember.
I really doubt that we'll ever be able to mix and match textures. As much as having City's stone in pretty much any pack is wanted, it just doesn't seem like much of a priority to me.
But who knows? They improved the skin select recently, so maybe texture mixing will be a thing at some point.
(Also, I wouldn't say that it's a must. Your title seems a tad overdramatic.)
There was a time when this topic popped-up quite frequently. Heck, I even made a thread on it (and it got locked for redundancy).
My idea was very similar: allow for a "User Texture Pack" that the, erm... user can select from their purchased TPs.
I agree, there are some packs that have a few nice blocks but overall don't appeal to me. If I could cherry-pick the blocks I like I'd be much more inclined to buy the pack (I might just buy all of them on principle if a Mix'n Match comes out).
Nevertheless, the point of many of the individual TPs is to build "themed" worlds. The City Pack is meant for modern style builds, so a fireman or doctor doesn't seem out of place there. Naturally, you could always suspend your immersion and ignore the look of armor. That's what I tend to do.
Sorry about the title. I only meant It's a must in the sense that in my opinion (maybe the option of others) this feature seems to make a lot of sense.
Thanks for you feedback. I wasn't aware that this topic had come up before. I haven't seen it and it was mind blowing to me that no one else had already had this idea(so I thought). I would even be willing to pay for the option of having a custom text her back like an ad-on.
