You can't, realms is not (yet) available on consoles. I've heard that they plan to add it in 2017, but I can't find the article that said that so take it with a grain of salt.
I am a lil confused myself on the matter. You can add them and such, I did read on mojang site that you can not have mods or any texture packs on or you can't see or join.
"If you're having trouble accepting invites or joining Realms, be sure that you are not using a modded game client, and are not using a resource pack that does not contain textures for the Realm buttons. If you are, switch to the standard Minecraft game client, click Options, click Resource Packs, then return to the default"
It is confusing because of the xbox live thing, but it's just the account you use to connect, the functionality to do so doesn't exist in the console version of the game yet. According to ms, that functionality is under development. They're not really clear on who is doing that work, it seems odd that the info comes from ms and not 4j, but then 4j is notoriously stingy on communicating work in progress.
Long story short, as of now realms is not currently available on consoles, despite using a console account to connect, but should be coming some time next year.
The info comes from news.xbox.com. You can find the article by going there and searching for friendly update. I'd post a link, but I'm not sure what the forum rules are regarding links. I've seen moderators state that some post or another violated posted rules, but a brief look around where I would expect to find them yielded no results
Here is my issue. My nephew and I were trying to connect MCPE realms from an Android lollipop tablet to an Xbox 360 and have been unsuccessful.
How do we connect?

Then why are we able to see a list of Xbox friends on MCRealms?
Fore-shadowing?
Like when 4J added acacia and dark oak logs to the game before the saplings to grow them.
