- Glass blocks are formed and can be mined with silk touch
- The glass block could be created under the sand
- Glass blocks are "dropped," like if a player dropped them
- It could create a new type of glass or glass like material
- It could create a new type of sand or sand like material
- The new material is "electrified" and shocks/stuns and deals damage to hostile mobs who touch it
- The lightning could create an or that can be smelted to get a material that could be added to a block (glass, fence, door, etc. to be used like an electric fence.
Just because something is realistic does not mean it needs to be added to the game. This is one of those things. It adds very little and only serves to make living in deserts progressively uglier.
I feel like it dropping the glass blocks as items instead of changing the sand to glass would be kind of redundant, as the lightning could hit somewhere that isn't close to or inaccesible to the player, thus causing the items to sit there until they disappear. If this were to be added, it would have to change the blocks or else it would have such a tiny effect that it would go very unnoticed and would be a pointless thing to implement. If you could come up with a way for it to have a slightly bigger impact than dropping blocks then I'd easily support this.

Then can I assume this is a console version suggestion? Or are you unsure of if lightning can strike deserts in the PC version. If this is intended as a console suggestion it can be moved to the appropriate console suggestions section.
As for the idea itself, I'm not a fan. I don't like non-renewable landscape being arbitrarily destroyed with no player control over it. I'm okay with Creepers because that is entirely my fault if one detonates and while I dislike it on Endermen they do it too infrequently and only one block at a time for it to be a big deal.
But then again it is such a minor change I don't really care much either way, even if I skew towards no support.

Support, I always love walking through a forest after a storm and seeing any remaining fires from the lightning burning. This would just be the sand-biome equivalent.
Does lightning strike in deserts? Noob question maybe, but I just don't spend much time in desert biomes. I know it doesn't rain in them.
Honestly, I'm just not sure you could do it without making the landscape ugly. It's a nifty idea, but it has consequences. Given that the whole idea is responsible, I'm not sure what you could change without completely changing the idea.
If we are looking at realism, lightning can create some funky decorations. In this aspect, I would suggest that it produces a decoration similar to a dead bush, but of course unique
.
This would simply turn a block of sand into a deco that can be mined in whatever way is appropriate, yet unique and only obtainable this way [or in creative]

When lightning strikes sand
- Glass blocks are formed and can be mined with silk touch
- The glass block could be created under the sand
- Glass blocks are "dropped," like if a player dropped them
- It could create a new type of glass or glass like material

- Add redstone and be able to turn on and off

Since it adds realism in effect.
This does add some realism.
Support.
I kind of like the idea. However, wouldn't that make certain landscapes ugly?

System.out.err("Nope");
Thanks for the support and ideas from everyone!
To: Notunknown,
- Just bust the glass if u don't like it... duh!
- I also suggested that it "drops" the glass blocks, not just creates.
I think it should make molten glass honestly, but I do love the idea of making minecraft more realistic so I support this.
I do kinda think it could be a new form of glass/sand
To: Broccoli_Monkey,
- I also suggested that it "drops" the glass and You pick it up.
- Not just that it placed a block on the ground.
- It could also be a new type of glass or glass like material or sand like material.
- Or the glass block could be created under the sand
To: MuzikBike,
On console versions, it can strike in deserts.

To: Chameleonred5,
- The glass could be formed in the ground (flat)
- The glass is formed a block under ground
