A while back I realized that wolves had stopped spawning I my world. I have tamed the 4 that were hanging around near my first house killing off my sheep, but have found no more anywhere in the world.
I also have no passive mobs spawning. At first this was because I was maxed with critters in my pens, but even after killing off a dozen cows nothing spawns. No cows, sheep, pigs, rabbits, or chickens. I have been getting chickens in the nether, not being ridden by anything, just the chickens. I am able to breed passives just fine, but none spawn even after I make space for them.
I'm also having trouble with villagers not breeding despite meeting all the conditions and having hearts on them, and being below the villager cap at 43. That's in the whole world, I have them all rounded up so I'm not just mis-counting.
Basically I get hostile mobs spawning (except slimes), but nothing else. The surface of my world is totally empty during the day outside of my two bases.
Has anyone else experienced this or have any idea what's wrong?
1.) Your world is old and was biome-shifted a while ago, making it so you live in a biome I which animals cannot spawn.
2.) All of the animals had wandered into caves or ponds and are stuck there. Rabbits will spawn in caves and get trapped regardless. There's no stopping that.
Yeah, I'm on 35. I don't think it's 1 or 2. My world is less than 2 months old (I got the game in mid March), and I killed off a bunch of cows to see if I could get them spawning again. I can still breed them, and I do get chickens from eggs, just nothing naturally spawning on it's own. I suppose it is possible there are some trapped somewhere, it just seems odd that after clearing out 12 cows I still see nothing.
You could try moving far away from your penned aninals to a place where livestock will spawn, then exit and save and reload. You will unload all penned animals and the game's 'count' on livestock will be reset to zero. They should spawn like crazy again. It seems that even a couple penned animals will dramatically reduce random spawns.
I've got two base, both in areas that can spawn animals. One has all my critters, the other has none. Which base I load in doesn't make a difference. Nor does traveling to/from the nether, which I do frequently because I've got a nether rail line between my bases.
What I suspect is happening is that there is a separate spawn cap that covers all passives. It won't stop breeding if the group the animal belongs to is below it's limit, but will prevent the natural spawning of any passive. I also suspect that villager breeding is affected by this spawn cap, not counting as breeding because their mechanic is different than other passives.
On my world theres an isolated island I mined off flat and use to hunt passives. I have some cats and dogs and thats all the animals I have, but passive mobs seem to spawn slowly. If I go to this island even if I travel by nether portal livestock spawning is pathetic. If I then save and exit and reload the game they start spawning like crazy and I can fill my inventory in about a half an hour with a looting III sword. If that didn't work for you then there has to be animals stuck somewhere near each of your bases. If you don't regularly clean up trapped animals around places you are at a lot they will forever be there while those chunks are loaded and take up mob cap. Jungles are terrible for this and it can be a pain to find them all.

There are a few potential issues:
1.) Your world is old and was biome-shifted a while ago, making it so you live in a biome I which animals cannot spawn.
2.) All of the animals had wandered into caves or ponds and are stuck there. Rabbits will spawn in caves and get trapped regardless. There's no stopping that.
3.) 4J broke something.

Since you mentioned not having slimes I gather you're on TU35.
I'm still on 34 so I guess I can't real help. All I can say is I have none of those issues. In fact, probably the opposite; passives spawn like crazy.

Yeah, I've been seeing mention of slimes not spawning as well, so I have reason to believe that something is amiss.
