Is the upcoming 1.9 console edition going to be savegame compatible with the current console edition? Personally I think it will not be considering all of the new gameplay mechanics implemented, still however very curious. Will we need to start a new seed after the 1.9 update?
Who knows... we just really got from 1.6.X to 1.8.8... an update to 1.9 is probably a loooong ways away yet. I don't think 1.9 is even actually released on the PC yet (It's still in the pre-release snapshot debugging phase.)
Are you asking if/when the console edition updates to the equivalent of 1.9 are you going to be able to load your old worlds?
Because the answer to that is Most Likely Yes. Barring random glitches that would corrupt old worlds, every time an update came out old worlds were still accessible. Specifically, you would be able to load a pre-1.9 world and play it with the "new" combat mechanics. That's the way it's always worked in the past; I see no reason why it wouldn't work the same for future updates.
Just curious, though... .... Why would you think it wouldn't work?
Apologies for any confusion, yes that was what I was asking if old worlds would still be available after the 1.9 console update. Excuse my newbish experience with the game since other games usually require a restart after massive updates. Thanks for the information though, much appreciated

No new biomes or terrain features in the overworld, so the world generator should stay the same in the next update. Seeds from the current version should produce the same worlds in the next update. The only exception is the end, which will include a whole section of new items. The only thing you'd miss out on is some of the new end stuff, like the chorus plants, end bricks, and, most unfortunately, Elytra wings
The majority of the 1.9 update is new combat and item features, will fit in seamlessly with whatever you have in your current world.

What about the igloos? that includes new structure generation, so older seeds would be affected by the 1.9

I gave up on console edition Minecraft due to so many restrictions because of console memory limitations. Mob caps are extremely frustrating, not to mention the lag caused after creating large builds, its to the point my animals are skating instead of walking lol. I'll retire to pocket edition until I get a pc, at least in PE the worlds are infinite and no mob caps giving you a much more populated less lonely world and much smoother.
Been fun on console but you just can't get too hardcore without hitting the barriers so to speak. My guess is 1.9 or at least parts of it will hit consoles eventually but not anytime soon.
What do you mean? You heard other users saying that 1.9 features might never happen on console versions because of so many restrictions due to console memory limitations.
This, keep your Elytra, if I have banners and they fixed MCCE-441 bug, I'd have everything I want out of Minecraft. 1.9 features would be nice but, eh.

I would hope 4J could have a "Reset End" option just like they have a "Reset Nether" option when loading your worlds.

Forgot about those. But the terrain isn't changing, just getting a new structure. You could igloos to generate on unloaded chunks
I just want banners :[
