I had never been excited to enchant prior to tu31 because I pretty much controlled what enchants I got. That little cheat was done away with and
I could not be happier. But lets face it, the new xp system is rather slow though for very good reasons but lets say for the fun of it, you want to level
up faster. You can go and kill mob after mob, even build an xp farm for that matter. The bar to each level filling up slower and slower. Or you can go cave exploring trying to find iron and gold to smelt which does give fair xp. Or go to the nether and try finding a ton of quartz to mine without facing the ghast's new found machinegun like fire rate and sniper like accuracy. Its funny, every other mob seems stupified anymore but ghasts are vicious.
There is another way though. Something that most may not even realize. A simple item tossed in a furnace that yields the same xp if not more than iron and is readily available almost every map. I am talking about the potatoe. Seriously, cooking a few stacks of potatoes will level you up quick! Faster than almost everything. The ender dragon being the only entity that yields more xp. So if you're having a hard time enchanting, invest in potatoes and always remember, this spud's for you!
yeah, I'm loving not dropping from 30 to 0 to just enchant one item. I'll dump all the Lapis it wants to only drop 3 levels to enchant an item. Very happy with this system.
Great tip on the potato. Am I the only one that wishes the Lapis would stay in the slot of the enchantment table?
I kind of like that lapis doesn't stay in the table... that way, if I want a particular enchant, I have to consciously put the lapis into the table. That way, I don't wind up accidentally enchanting an item with an enchant that I don't want.
Agree... great tip about spuds. I use stoves as "stepping stones" in my walkways and basically cook anything that I don't need in it's raw form. That way, I can collect XP by emptying stoves even as I walk between places in my world. Needless to say, I earn a lot of XP just by cooking wood into charcoal to keep all those stoves fueled.

I hate the new enchantment system, I absolutely HATE it.
