Hello. Forgive me if this has been asked. If so, just point me in the right direction and ill read up on it. My kid has been playing the free version of MC on his Ipad for years. He is 9 yrs old. He wants to join a server on his xbox 360. He got MC for the holidays this year. How do i go about doing this? He wants to be able to play the same way that some of his web idols play (Pat and Jen, Stampy, Dan TDM, etc). While I am very good with computers and networking, I know nothing about MC and servers. How do i get him started on a kids friendly server so he can play other kids on his Xbox 360? Is there a step by step tutorial somewhere? Thanks.
Minecraft works differently on console than it does for pc. There are no servers on Xbox 360. You can basically play in other people's worlds from your friends list on Xbox live.
1) Basically, he needs an Xbox Live Gold membership (see the Xbox Live website): http://www.xbox.com/en-CA/live/ This Gold membership is what enables him to play any Xbox 360 games online. There is a monthly or annual fee for this membership.
2) Then, he needs to get added to the friends lists of those people he wants to play with online. Some people who "host" online Minecraft 360 worlds put up posts in the Multiplayer section here on the forums. http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/minecraft-xbox-360-edition/mcx360-multiplayer He might also find friends closer to home who play Minecraft (e.g. at school).
3) Then, it's a matter of the host being active (i.e. playing Minecraft) when your son is. (Unlike real PC servers, the Xbox 360 Minecraft games are stored only on the host's Xbox and do not stay online if the host Xbox is turned off or is playing another game.) The host may also have it set to "invite only," in which case the host would have to issue an invite through Live to your son in order to play. If worlds are available that he can join, they should just show up as a list under the "Join" tab when he launches Minecraft.
