So my friend has s server and me and my other friend who are on the same console want to join, can you play split screen online on someone else's server?
That depends on what sort of settings he has. If, for example, you and all of your friends who play with you on your console appear on the host's friends list, then you could probably all join from your console in splitscreen. If only you appear on the host's friends list but all your friends' profiles are on your friends list, then it could work if he opened up his world to "friends of friends." If some of the players are using the "Guest" feature (i.e. they are signed in only as your "guest" without their own Live Gold gamertag) to play online, then he would basically have to set his world so that anyone could join in order for your friends.to play.
