Also I think there is a zipper elevator system that could work. Youtube is probably your best friend as it has a good amount of tutorials on different builds.

try a waterfall with signs every other block. This will make it so players won't drown, yet they can still swim up.

From what I've seen, if TU31 brings slime blocks, elevators are a ton easier to make with redstone now.
In 1.8 elevators with slime blocks are Ganna be a peice of cake you can do it.
